5 September, 2013 - Idea: NEOS - Cool Electric Motorcycle With Sidecar
NEOS
NEOS
#NEOS #Electric #Sidecar - A couple of years ago, Daniel Munnik designed a pretty cool motorcycle with a modular sidecar, called the NEOS. The combo looks straight out of a big budget sci-fi movie, and the specs mirror the high tech design.

Mind you, it's only a design, no prototype, but it would be pretty nice to see if this could be made into a real working bike. The motorcycle is enclosed, i.e., it's really a car with two (in fact three) wheels, and it has a nifty way of adding a sidecar, so it is modular. The dimensions are slightly wider than a real motorcycle, but narrower than a car.

The engine is electric, running on a 3-phase AC induction motor, and using lithium batteries. According to the designer, the bike can travel 260 kilometers on a 2 hour charge (gulp).............

#EricBuell #Hybrid #Motorcycle - A lot has been written recently about Erik Buell's new sports motorcycle. Several teasers, hints here and there, but so far no details have been published.

But a quick look at recently filed patents will show that Erik Buell filed a patent for a hybrid motorcycle (and scooter). Maybe it's nothing, but the patent was filed January 2012.

You will see that the patent calls for an electric motor producing in excess of 200 horsepower, possibly even 400 hp! Engine displacement can be anything from 100 to 1000 cc...........

25 July, 2013 - The Right Way Of Adding Extra Range To Electric Vehicles
Patent Wind Turbine Charging
Patent Wind Turbine Charging
#Electrical #Patent #Turbine - We showed you a few days ago a project to make electric vehicles (motorcycles, cars) go further without batteries but with wind turbines. The project in our eyes is doomed to fail, but this recently submitted patent has a better chance.

The idea is the same, except here we are using normal batteries. The idea is to use specific spaces in the frame of the vehicle to place a wind turbine. When the vehicle is in motion, the wind passes through these boxes, which makes the blade turn. With the turning motion of the blades you can generate electricity, which can then be sent to either the electrical engine or to the batteries...........

22 July, 2013 - Idea: Why This Alternative Electric Charging Will Not Work - Wind Cycle
Wind Cycle
#Electric #Kickstarter #Motorcycle - Sometimes it hurts me when I see a crowd-funding project which I know will fail miserably while the project owner firmly believes he has found the Egg of Columbus. In this case it is the Wind Cycle project on Kickstarter.

If you have a look at the introduction video, you can see that Brandon really believes it can work, but physics will prove him wrong. The idea is to use Ultra Capacitors instead of batteries, and have them charged while you ride your electric motorcycle using wind turbines.

19 July, 2013 - Be.e: A True Ecological & Electrical Scooter
Be.e Plant Scooter
Be.e Plant Scooter
#Ecological #Electrical #Scooter #Be.e - Most people equate an electrical scooter or motorcycle to be ecological, and in a sense they are, but not as much as you would think. Obviously the battery is enormously not ecological, but what do you think about the frame and other body parts?

Dutch design firm Waarmakers have released the first ever truly ecological electric scooter, the Be.e. And the reason it is ecological is because it is made out of plants, flax to be more accurate. Flax is what is used to make linen (amongst others), and using the flax seed, Waarmakers have made a glass-fibre composite frame, but without the glass part. The glass has been substituted by the flax seeds. In other words, the scooter is made out of plants...........

16 July, 2013 - Extend The Range Of Your Electric Motorcycle By Far
EP Tender
France flag
#Electric #EV #Tender - If you think about it, this is stupid, even FUBAR. People who buy electric motorcycles (or cars) do it to save money on fuel or/and because of ecological convictions (lack of CO2, noise, etc). Some, possibly myself included, because of interesting performances.

But this product goes against any of the above ideas. EP Tender got launched a few days ago in France, and it is a trailer equipped with a small 600cc engine (coming from the Tata Nano car) and a 35 liter fuel tank. The EP Tender "talks" to your electric car (and maybe with some adaptations to your electric motorcycle) and when the batteries start running on empty, kicks-in the 600cc engine to recharge your batteries while you keep driving...........

27 June, 2013 - Review: Zero Electric Motorcycle In A Rural Environment
Zero DS Electric Motorcycle 2013
Zero logo
#electric #Zero #Review #Motorcycle - For the next 10 days or so I will be riding a Zero electric motorcycle in my neck of the woods (Normandy). The DS model (Dual-Sport) is probably the best suited for here since I've got loads of small roads and tractor tracks to go through.

But why is a rural environment different? Electric motorcycle are ideally suited for cities, since the motorcycles stop frequently for red lights or intersections, and every time you hit the brakes, it generates electricity, charging the batteries and thereby giving the rider more range. Speeds are lower in the city, so the battery consumption is not enormous. On the other hand, riding on motorways, usually what commuters do, drains batteries, and therefore the range is lower.

Rural riding is a bit in between both types. The closest town for my bread & croissants to where I live (I live in the "deep" country") is 5 kilometers from my house (including a steep hill). The closest small city is 30 kilometers away and the closest big city is 70 kilometers (note: I make a distinction between small city and big city by the number of McDonalds they have: 1 = a small city, 1+ = big city)...........

24 June, 2013 - France: Paris- Motorcycles Can Use Electric Car Charging Points
AutoLib Station
France flag
#Electric #Charing #Motorcycle - Here's something I didn't know. In Paris there's an electric car sharing service (that much I did know), much like their popular bicycle sharing service, called AutoLib (it's quite popular, so much so that Indianapolis have signed a deal to replicate it in their city). With the AutoLib program, you subscribe to the service, and can go to one of the many electricity recharge station, drop in your credit card, hop into one of the funky electric cars, and ride through Paris. When you are finished, you drop the car at any of the fast recharge stations.

So far, nothing of interest to use motorcycle riders. But what I recently learned is that you are allowed to ride your electric motorcycle to one of the charging stations of the AutoLib program and recharge your bike's batteries.

You need to subscribe, which will cost you €15 per year. That includes during the day the first 2 hours (and at night the first 4 hours), and after that it'll cost you €1 per hour of charging time (at night, it'll be €1 for the whole night).

That looks like a pretty good deal. If you ride up at night, plug it in, and it'll cost you €1 to recharge. Not bad.

11 June, 2013 - France: Single Operator For Electric Fast Charging Stations?
Autolib Charging Station
France flag
#Electric #Charging #France - In a move that is not typical for the current French politicians (in other words, thoughtful and creative), the French government announced last May that they are looking into creating a central and single operator for all electric fast charging stations for electric cars and motorcycles. Currently, like in most other countries where there are electric vehicles, the vehicle manufacturer tends to install charging stations. Since often the standards differ, the charging station will only work for that manufacturer or for those that have adopted their standards.

The most obvious example here in France is the difference between Renault and the PSA group (Peugeot/Citroen). Both have electric cars, both have electric charging stations, but one can not use the other's.

By appointing a single operator that installs and operates electric fast charging stations, all must adhere to that standard. The idea is to have 5,000 stations alongside motorways and secondary roads. But this being France, there are a lot of different opinions and to "cure" that, they are all talking, so it might take a while before we see this happen.

In principle, we are going to go back in time, to when there was a single telecom operator, a single electricity company and single gas company. So I guess once the single fast charging station operator has been in place, they'll break it up.

5 June, 2013 - Spain: Original Electric Scooter Sharing Program
Motit
Motit
#Motit #Barcelona #Electric - Most big cities nowadays have bicycle sharing programs, while the more daring cities have electric car sharing programs. They all rest on the same principle; you take the vehicle from a station and later on bring it back to a station (not necessarily the one you took it from).

But in Barcelona, Spain they came up with a much more elegant and easy solution, and it involves electric scooters. Called Motit, the program uses electric scooters developed by GoingGreen, and manufactured in Barcelona. These funky little scooters/motorcycles have an eye-catching color, a top speed of 65 kph and a range of 40 to 60 kms, depending on road and driving style. They weigh 80 kgs.

In contrast with the bicycle sharing programs (and electric cars), you can't go up to a station and take one. That is because there are no stations! You need the free smartphone app, which will tell you where the closest available Motit scooter is. Because you don't bring it back to a station, but leave it where you are going...........

28 May, 2013 - Vectrix To Launch Electric Motorcycle Shortly
Vectrix Electric Superbike Concept
Vectrix logo
#Vectrix @Electric #Motorcycle - Vectrix, a company that over the last few years has had its ups & downs, is about to launch an electric motorcycle. They have several models of electric scooters available, one that has won the "Scooter of the Year" award from the European CleanWeek 2020 organization, the VX-1 li/li+.

Now Vectrix is getting ready to launch a new electric motorcycle. Called the VT-1, it's going to be the equivalent of a 125cc motorcycle with a low speed of 55 mph (88 kph), in other words, a real commuter. Proof that it's a commuter is that it will have interchangeable batteries on board, meaning you can take the batteries out and recharge them, or swap them for ones that have been charged. A low top speed means it's really only meant for riding in the city...........

Sora
#Sora #Electric - Canada does not want to be left out of the electric motorcycle revolution, and they are bringing a wonderful electric muscle bike into the game. Made by Lito Green Motion, their first electric motorcycle is called Sora.

Sora looks like the love child of a Confederate Motorcycle and a Triumph Rocket III. In other words, it looks powerful, and surprise, surprise; it is powerful. It looks like a traditional motorcycle, but it's totally electric with its high-density lithium polymer batteries.

The Sora will accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 4 seconds, and it will top the speed scales at 200 kph. As far as range goes, it's a very respectable 300 kilometers (but at what speed?)...........

4 March, 2013 - More Info On The Electric Toyota i-Road Motorcycle/Trike
Toyota i Road Official
Toyota logo
#Electric #EV - In January of this year, Japanese car maker Toyota, teased the world press with a picture of a new electric vehicle they were planning to launch in Geneva, the i-Road. From the photo it looked like a three wheeler, with the passenger sitting pillion style (behind the driver) in a covered motorcycle. Not much else has been revealed, until now....

The i-Road is indeed a three wheeled motorcycle/car/vehicle, electrically driven with the passenger sitting behind the driver/rider. The motorcycle is narrow, narrow enough to split lanes with only 850 mm of width (length is 2350 mm and height is 1445 mm). It's immediate competitor is Renault's Twizy with 1230 mm of width, so far more narrow.

The i-Road has a tilting technology called "Active Lean" which, like the Piaggio MP3, allows the vehicles to take curves at an angle...........

I don't known about you, but I absolutely hate going on city tours on a bus with a guide. I prefer not to go than to sit in a bus listening to a tour guide's drivel. But here's one interesting guided tour way to visit one of world's most interesting cities, Beijing, China.

Beijing Electric Bike Tours is a Canadian owned and operated touring organization who, as their name says, operates guided tours through China's Beijing on electric scooters.

Using 330 - 350 w electric scoots, and an English speaking guide, you tour the mythical city on your own scooter, giving you a freedom rarely offered by bus tours...........

5 November, 2012 - The Netherlands: Interesting Electric Motorcycle Taxi Company
Hopper Electric Scooter taxi
The Netherlands flag
The Netherlands is an eco-friendly country, with cities like Amsterdam seeing more bicycles than cars. There are quite a lot of motorcycles as well, but what's interesting is the new motorcycle taxi company operating in Amsterdam.

Since October 1st, the new Hopper motorcycle taxi company offers a novel approach to bring people to their final destination. They use an electric scooter for the "last mile", in other words, for short inter-city destinations. But the interesting thing is that the scooters are limited to a maximum speed of 25 kph. That speed limit allows you to ride a scooter without a helmet in The Netherlands. This means logistically, it's easier to use, since the cab company doesn't need to bring different helmets. You really hop on and off.

Also interesting is the fare. There's only one price, and that is €2.50..........

4 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: Zero Motorcycles - Making Electric Go Faster
Zero S
Zero logo
Although the Zero press conference was on Wednesday, the day I couldn't be at Intermot thanks to the Belgian railroads who decided to have an all-out strike, I still managed to visit the Zero stand on Tuesday.

Reports were already out that Zero had successfully updated their main electric motorcycle, their new flagship, to not only look like a real motorcycle, but have the performance and range that would make this electric bike acceptable for general use.

The new Zero S has doubled the range of their bikes, under ideal riding conditions you can ride a good 220 kilometers (137 miles) on a single charge. And if you have the "S" configured with the rapid charging option (CHAdeMO - something you can always bolt on afterwards), the 95% full charge can be done within an hour.......

27 September, 2012 - Video: Getting Around Hong Kong On A Brammo
Video clip
Brammo logo
Brammo Hong Kong released an interesting video of one of their Enertia electric motorcycles riding around and into Hong Kong. It's interesting since a) Hong Kong is an enormous big city, and b) you get to see how an electric motorcycle holds up in city traffic.

In the 20 minute long video, you get to see mostly motorway riding, so no stopping (and therefore recharging the battery) except for the toll booth (around the 4:30 mark).

The first thing that will strike you is the noise level! Don't for one moment think that electric motorcycles are totally silent; they're not. The engine itself makes a whining noise, and the chain adds to that. It's quieter than traditional motorcycles, but not silent.......

29 August, 2012 - Govecs: The Right Way Of Doing Electric Scooter Batteries
Govecs GO S1 4 Battery
Govecs logo
#electric #e-bikes - There are many reasons why people decided not to buy an electric scooter or motorcycle. Although many of the traditional reasons, like performance, range and even price, are becoming less of a factor, one reason not to buy an e-Bike is the battery charging method.

Simply put, you need to have a power outlet where you park your motorcycle. If you live in a house, it will not be a great problem, even if you don't have a power outlet outside. You can make do.... but houses are usually found outside the big cities, in the suburbs. If you live in the city, and have an apartment, you could be out of luck. Even if you're lucky enough to have an underground parking space, chances are that there's no power outlet. If you don't have a parking space, you're not going to hang a power cord down your window 15 floors down to charge your scooter or motorcycle, are you?

So the only sensible thing is to take the battery with you. But 99% of the electric motorcycles and scooters don't allow you to do this. Their batteries are embedded deeply inside the vehicle, and are often very heavy. The e-Solex was one of the first to allow their customer to remove the battery and take it home to charge. But the battery is relatively small and light.

Now there's Govecs...........

3 August, 2012 - Video: GasGas TXT-e Put Through Its Paces
Video clip
GasGas logo
Electric motorcycles are becoming more and more popular, with great e-bikes out there. But if there's one sport where the electric motorcycle should excel it's trial. You don't need a long range, you need a lot of torque and a light bike.

That's what GasGas thought, and since they are a leader in trial bikes, they made an electric version of their trial motorcycle; the TXT-e. They handed it over to Frenchman Thierry Raoul who put the bike through its pace.

Here's the video of him having fun with the GasGas. Notice how he can manage to move it sideways as if it weighs nothing. Climbing obstacles seems to be no problem for the electric bike. Quite impressive.

The bike weighs 67 kg, including the batteries and has a 14 kW electric engine.

20 July, 2012 - The Netherlands: Meter Maids Go Electric
Amsterdam Electric Metersmaids
The Netherlands flag
It looks like getting a parking fine is going to be ecological in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The company that manages the parking meters has just received 14 electric scooters for their meter maids (and boys) to zoom around the canal city looking for cars that have run out of time on their parking meter and giving them a nice fine.

The 14 scooters are from the German Govecs, and the electric scooter allows them to ride 140 kilometers, fining cars left, right and center. That's a lot of tickets they can issue before needing to recharge. But at least it's ecological. Personally, I think they should walk....

16 July, 2012 - GasGas Electric Trial Motorcycles - For Kids
GasGas TXT E12
GasGas logo
I've said it before, trial motorcycles are the best motorcycle platform for electrical bikes. You don't need the range (you're not going anywhere), you just need low weight and a lot of torque, something electrical motorcycle offer. It's also a sport where engine noise can distract the rider trying to climb impossibly high obstacles.

Spanish trial motorcycle manufacturer, with a big reputation, GasGas, already has an electric trial competition bike, but now they have more electric trial bikes - for kids.

The GasGas TXT e8 and e12 are made for kids aged between 2 and 10 years, depending on the model.

5 June, 2012 - Europe: Electric Vehicle Sales To Reach €1.7 Billion By 2017
Statistics Article
Europe flag
#EV #Electric - According to the market research company Frost & Sullivan, the sales of Electric Vehicles (EV - Cars and Motorcycles) in Europe will reach €1.7 Billion by the year 2017. 2010 saw a sales of €55 million in Europe, but the company sees an expansion of 50% each year.

The largest hold-back is the battery technology used today, with the cost of the battery materials rising. New battery technology could accelerate the sales of EVs, plus additional government subsidies for the purchase of electric cars and motorcycles.

30 to 40% of manufacturers who subcontract the development and manufacturing of the electric engines will be insourcing this over the next few years.

31 May, 2012 - Hong Kong: 1000 Electric Charging Stations
Brammo Hong Kong Charging Station
Hong Kong flag
#Brammo #Electric Hong Kong is going totally ballistic with electric cars and motorcycles. Already Brammo had sold the first few electric motorcycles to their police force, and electric cars are selling pretty well for such a small territory. The number of EVs (Electric Vehicles) is growing. Maybe the total number is very small, 310 to be accurate, but last year that number was 74, so a massive increase. The government themselves have 33 EVs, and another 43 will arrive in the coming months. Another 140 will be ordered this year.

The Hong Kong government and private companies had already installed 500 EV charging stations, but now the government has stepped in and accelerated the roll out of stations. By the end of the month of June, there will be 1,000 electric charging stations.

30 May, 2012 - Electric Motorcycles Will Pay Less Insurance
Motorcycle Insurance
USA flag
Apart from their high and often steep purchase price, electric motorcycles offer many advantages. True, they also still have many disadvantages, like range and speed, but for many the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

The main advantage, as you can imagine, is no fuel bill. The electricity used to charge the motorcycle's batteries is far less costly than gasoline. Add to the equation that electric motorcycles often have a very high torque, the e-bikes can be fun to ride.

But another advantage is being sprung on electric vehicle owners; insurance. Insurance companies are looking more favorable on traditional powered ones, be it cars or motorcycles.

21 May, 2012 - Biiista Designer Electric Motorcycles
Biiista
Biiista
Designing electric motorcycles is often a "green field" design process; you start with a clean slate - no baggage, no legacy, no history. That is why you often see the strangest looking electric motorcycles (Brammo Enertia, Agility Saietta, Orphiro, Axle EV-X7). And the Austrian Biiista (that's three "i" please) can be considered one of them.

The shape, though very nice, would look more at home in a comic strip or animation movie, with maybe Jessica riding it. But this is serious. The 5 kWh battery (an 8 kHw is under study) will power this electric motorcycle to speeds of up to 100 kph, with a range of 100 kilometers. That's the performance of a serious 125cc motorcycle, and the bike only weighs 140 kgs.

The bike develops 10.5 kW power, and has a torque of 210 Nm, not bad.

17 May, 2012 - Patent: Electric Front Wheel Drive For Conventional Motorcycles
Electric Front Wheel Motorcycle Patent
Interesting patent that got filed October last year. The idea is nifty, but the application a bit iffy.

The patent is for an electric front wheel drive for a conventional, gas guzzling, motorcycle. We've seen several 2 wheel drive motorcycles, but all use hydraulics to power the front wheel. Making the front wheel electrically powered can be interesting, since it should save in cost and weight.

The electric front wheel drive would be coupled to a controller that works in sync with the rear drive and engine. The controller would regulate the speeds of both wheels, making sure one does not run faster, or slower, than the other.

Electric Motion Bercy Back Flip
The French manufacturer of electric trial motorcycles, Electric Motion, has a new website. The company got in the news recently because the first backflip accomplished with an electric motorcycle was done on their bike, an EM 5.7.

Despite having only one product, they have a busy web site. Unfortunately, the site is in French only.

The EM 5.7 electric trial bike has already started in the competition circuits. The bike itself has 14 hp and 22 Nm torque for 72 kilos. The motorcycle can get you up to a speed of 55 kph, more than enough for this sport category. The battery will last 40 to 180 minutes, again enough to compete in trial competitions. The brushless engine is air cooled.

2 May, 2012 - Patents: Electric Motorcycle Vehicle Approach Notification Control Apparatus
Patent Noise Machine Electric Motorcycles
Please note, this is a serious article, not a joke. If you read the headline, "Vehicle Approach Notification Control Apparatus", you might think we're talking about a horn. But we're not, at least, not really. Or maybe we should be...

The patent was filed last year 27 September, and is meant to stop pedestrians having a heart attack when an electric motorcycle rides up to them. We all know the problem with electric bikes, they are almost noiseless, so an unexpecting pedestrian might just wander off onto the road and get hit by one.

This patent wants to emulate an engine sound, the actual sound will depend of the c.c. equivalent of the electric engine, and play it back when riding. More clever than that, the sound will vary depending on the speed of the electric motorcycle. The sound will also vary if it is raining, or if it has become night. So the device is full of sensors to play a sound of a combustion engine.

But instead of patrolling the streets, the 108 scooters are stored in some storage area, and not used. Abandoned! The reason? The batteries do not work, and make it impossible to ride.

25 April, 2012 - USA: New Electric Motorcycle Speed Test Procedure

You might think it's a bit strange, but it's not. The Motorcycle Industry Council of the USA (MIC) have introduced a procedure to test and validate the top speeds of electric motorcycles.

Until now, a manufacturer of e-bikes could announce whatever he wanted for top speeds for their motorcycles. Vaporware? Fantasyware? Anything could go, since they would "test" their motorcycles under lab conditions, removing all aerodynamic drag factors from the bikes (like mirrors, top case, etc), use very skinny riders weighing next to nothing, and then publish a top speed for their bikes that no person would ever reach in real life.

MIC have now published a series of procedures for testing electric motorcycle's top speeds. In summary, the procedures entail:

20 April, 2012 - e-bikes, Electric Motorcycles, To Become Cheaper
Electric motorcycle vending machine
It's kind of a headline that is so obvious, that I might have said "Next year, there will be taxes", or "the sun will rise tomorrow morning". The real question is BY HOW MUCH?

The reason electric motorcycle, also known as e-bikes, are going to drop in price is not because they are selling like hot cakes, or croissants in my part of the world. Because they are not. The amounts sold as a whole is still less than the smallest "normal" motorcycle manufacturer. And maybe that is because they are still expensive, so seen more as a toy than a normal vehicle.

The reason electric motorcycles are dropping in price is because the most expensive element of the bike, the battery, is dropping in price. An estimated 25% or more of the price of an e-bike is the battery.

19 April, 2012 - Doing Something About Electric Scoooter Silence - Domino Pizza Way
Video clip
Domino Pizza logo
Electric motorcycles and scooters are great... they use no gasoline, they don't pollute, and they run quite silently. And that can be a problem. With pedestrians used to traffic that makes noise, even the most quiet car makes a lot of noise when driving, an electric motorcycle or scooter can become dangerous. Pedestrians can walk onto the road thinking there is no traffic, cyclists can get hurt when an electric vehicle overtakes them, etc.

Authorities all over the world have been contemplating laws that will ensure that an electric vehicle makes some noise. But their search is over. Domino Pizzas in The Netherlands has come up with the best solution. Their electric pizza delivery scooters criss-cross the Dutch cities delivering piping hot pizzas, and Domino decided to not only make them safer for the rest of the traffic, but also do a bit of advertising at the same time.

If you look, and listen, to the video below, you'll hear the electric scooter riding through traffic, while the scooter "talks" to the cyclists and pedestrians. What it is saying is "Domino's Domino's Domino's Yummy Yummy Yummy Domino's Domino's Domino's Domino Pizzas".

So this way the traffic is safe, AND they advertise their pizzas at the same time. I just wouldn't want to be one of their delivery boys; having to hear the recording the whole time will make me want to ride into one of the many canals of Amsterdam.

Munch Racing team
Munch Racing team
The first round of the FIM e-Power race, electric motorcycle race, is now history. Held at Magny-Cours last weekend during the famous Bol d'Or endurance race, the e-bikes race was a disappointment. Not the bikes, nor the teams, but the fact that there were only 3 bikes at the start. Not much of a competition..

It's something that the FIM needs to address properly if they want to make this an interesting race.

Here's a look at the winning team and their riders, Munch racing Team.

13 April, 2012 - Electric vs Gas Powered - A Video Look
Video clip
I used my trusty iPhone 4 smartphone's video camera to shoot some video of some of the motorcycles doing their free practise runs at the Bol d'Or at Magny-Cours. Obviously I also filmed the e-Power electric motorcycles, so here's a brief video clip of not only the e-bikes, but also comparing them in the same curve with a "normal" bike.

The "normal" motorcycles were the Bol d'Argent category, so not full race endurance motorcycles. The first bit is a warm up lap for the e-bikes, followed by a fast lap, followed by a "normal" bike, followed again by 2 more of the electric ones.

I think you'll need to start getting used to seeing more and more footage of electric bike races, but it might take much longer if I look at FIM's attempt at organizing the e-Power race. It's just comical, and I'm not talking about the teams, but the organization.

12 April, 2012 - A 1st Look At The FIM E-Power Race, And Probably Last
e Power Magny Cours
e Power Magny Cours
#electric #FIM - As you may gather form the title, I am not amused. I planned to spend the weekend covering the 1st leg of the FIM e-Power race, electric race motorcycle, in the world championship.

To my surprise, and dismay, there are only three teams present at Magny-Cours. I heard from the stewards that it's an improvement, since last year there were only 2 electric motorcycles.

It's a pity that FIM is not throwing in a lot of their weight to promote the category. Paying for teams to attend (like the USA ones), would make the event much more interesting. I for one, am not planning to get up early in the morning to see the qualifiers or even the race, since it's not a real race if there are only 3 bikes. It's more a comical farce.

11 April, 2012 - Gone To The Races, Electric Motorcycle races
Gone to the races
FIM logo
#Electric #Motorcycles #FIM: I'm on the road again, gone to the races. No, not horse races, but electric motorcycle races. I've planned to see the first leg of the international championships of the FIM e-Power races at Magny-Cours, France this weekend.

I've decided it is time to start looking at these races more seriously if we want electric motorcycles to advance in technology. The only way electric bikes will improve rapidly is via competition, since that is what will drive them to make them ride faster, and for longer distances.

Unfortunately, FIM and other organizers still don't look at this category seriously. The E-Power race is the first race on the agenda (the main event is the Bol d'Or 24 hour endurance race), starting on Saturday 9 AM..... 9 AM??? We'll be lucky to see the racers show up at that time....forget about any public and press (except me).

I'll be sending out photos to my Facebook and Twitter accounts, not only from the e-Power race and qualifiers, but also the sidecar and Bol d'Or categories.

The 1st #backflip on an #electric motorcycle? Apparently, during the Paris X-Trial championships held last week, the public got to see the first backflip on an electric motorcycle.

Backflips are common in extreme sports, you get to see them in almost every X-Games show, but apparently this the first time it has been accomplished with an electric motorcycle. The whole idea of a backflip rests on a proper weight distribution, which on an electric bike is different. The rider, Christophe Bruand, did the backflip on an Electric Motion trial motorcycle.

Here's the video of the flip (narrated in French).
