| 10 May, 2013 - France: Monks, Motorcycles and Holiday | #Exposition #Monks #Abbey - Here's an interesting travel tip for those of you who are planning to visit France shortly. Starting on the 17th of May, until the 30th of June, in the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Ligugé the monks there are holding an exposition of enameled motorcycle art.
The expo is named "A Golden Century of Motorcycles", and consists of 25 enamel based portraits of vintage and modern motorcycles, even the latest Ducati Diavel and the Yamaha V-Max.
Apart from passing through the obligatory gift shop, you can even ask the monks to make an enamel rendering of your favorite motorcycle. All exposed artwork can also be purchased. Each artwork is on a copper plate measuring 17 x 25 cm...........

| 25 March, 2013 - France: 100 Year Celebration of the Motorcycle | Usually when I go out to make photos for an article, it involves packing up my motorcycle with all my cameras, computers, sleeping gear, toothbrush, etc, or it might involve planes, trains and automobiles. But whatever the mode of transportation, it'll mean it's going to take a while before I get there, and even longer before I get back. That's because I live in the real countryside, in a small (186 inhabitants) village in Upper Normandy. My next door neighbors are cows, and I mean the animals.
Once or twice I've had something as a source for an article close-by, usually 15 to 30 minutes ride from my house, and that made me happy, but last weekend on Sunday, in the closest town to me, Cany-Barville, was a exhibition called "100 Years of Motorcycles". Cany-Barville is almost at walking distance from my house, a little over 5 kilometers, so the expo got marked in big black marker in my agenda (something my iPad did not like), since it was going to be one I was not going to miss.
The only thing that troubled me, and I never got a response, was why "100 years". Motorcycles have existed for more than 100 years. Anyway, it didn't spoil my fun. So off I went to the exhibition. Now do remember, we're in the middle of "shit-kicker" country, so whatever it was going to be was small but done with gusto. ..........

| 28 January, 2013 - France: 1st Electric Motorcycle & Scooter Exhibition | #electric #eBikes - You can see that electric motorcycles and scooters are becoming more mainstream when they get their own exhibitions. Between April 16 and 18, Paris will see the opening of the eBikeTec exhibition, an expo dedicated to electric PTW.
The expo runs at the same time as the eCarTec, the electric car exhibition. The venue is Port de Versailles in Paris, and although the accent of the expo is more BtoB (business-to-business) the general public is welcome...........

| 9 January, 2013 - Belgium: Minister Wants To Ban Sexy Demo Babes From Exhibitions | Talk about equality and discrimination. The Minister of Equal Opportunities in Belgium, Joelle Milquet, is fed up with going to car and motorcycle exhibitions, like the show that opens on Friday in Brussels, and see sexy and scantly clad ladies demonstrating cars and bikes.
So she's putting a law into place that will forbid this, a bit like a Muslin Sharia law for exhibitions..........

| 12 November, 2012 - Eicma2012: Disaster Strikes - Me | Sorry for all those folks who were looking forward to seeing my photos and articles on the latest motorcycles, accessories and demo dollies at world's premiere motorcycle exhibition, Eicma.
I arrived today very early at the Parisian airport for a flight out to Milan, when I collapsed, waking up in the first aid room. I had been exhausted for the last few days, and having not slept the night before, carrying 30 kilos of cameras and computers on my back, was enough for my system to crash, requiring a reboot.
With a drink plenty of liquid, take 2 aspirins and call me in the morning, I was sent home. I wasn't allowed to board. So I've arrived home again. This is the second big motorcycle expo that has gone sour on me, right after the Intermot train disaster.
It's becoming very expensive since my flights and hotels were all prepaid....
Sorry about it folks. Hope to do better next year. For the next few days, I'll leave the pre-programmed articles so I can rest a bit.

| 9 November, 2012 - EICMA 2012: On My Way - Here Is How To Follow | World's biggest motorcycle exhibition, the Milan, Italy EICMA will start Monday afternoon. It's an enormous event, with thousands of exhibitors showing off their latest motorcycles, accessories and clothing. Although press days are Tuesday and Wednesday, Monday will see two major press events; Ducati and Honda. Both have planned big events, Ducati at the fair's conference center, Honda in Milan itself.
As usual, I'll be there to cover this incredible event, armed with cameras, computers and smartphone. I've currently left my house in Normandy and making the long journey over to Milan with a stopover at Paris. I'll be back late Thursday.
Since press days are usually packed with press conferences back-to-back, with no room to even have lunch, it's going to be difficult to write up articles after each event. But I will be using my smartphone to upload interesting photos to my social media accounts. So while I'll be looking at the new motorcycles (and pretty demo girls), I'll have a few articles appear which I've programmed in advance so that you'll not find an empty space on this site. We'll keep you amused..............

| 8 November, 2012 - Eicma2012: What To Expect | A few more days and world's biggest motorcycle exhibition and fair opens its doors in Milan, Italy. Eicma as it is known is enormous, with more halls than you can imagine, more manufacturers, more stands and more visitors than anywhere else.
The annual event draws every major and minor motorcycle manufacturer and accessory maker in the world to show off their gear to thousands of journalists and visitors. So what can we expect to see? Well for one, as usual Eicma is FUBAR since they have not released the press conference schedules, so we do not know who will be presenting what. Which is normal for the Italian organization, they'll probably release it the day after the show has closed. So we'll just guess our ways...
But here's our guesstimates...........

| 4 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: Odds, Ends and Girls | The Intermot 2012 motorcycle exhibition was a short one for me, thanks to a Belgian railroad strike that cut short my visit. So I missed most of the press conferences on Tuesday, and Wednesday, which is my walk-around day, was totally cancelled.
Despite the very short trip, only a few hours at Intermot, I did very quickly go through some of the stands and photograph interesting things. But it's not much... and my last article of a motorcycle exhibition is always a long one - the demo girls, better known as demo dollies. Unfortunately, this year is not much, since the girls come out on the 2nd day. But there were a few, so you'll see them at the last part of this article. Sorry for those that were expecting them.........

| 4 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: Horex - The German Muscle Motorcycle | When the Horex was announced in 2010 in Germany, I was a bit sceptical. In the present day fuel and economical crisis, developing a new brand and motorcycle that has an enormous engine, and therefore fuel consumption, was in IMHO the wrong moment. I would have thought that any new manufacturer would go electric, or maybe hydrogen. But in this gutsy move Horex announced their first motorcycle using a 6 cylinder engine with a total of 1200cc.
The 6 cylinders are in V shape, but also inline, making this special design named VR. Their first, and so far only, model is a roadster, the Horex VR6, Roadster. So I decided to pay them a quick visit at the Intermot motorcycle exhibition......

| 4 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: Zero Motorcycles - Making Electric Go Faster | Although the Zero press conference was on Wednesday, the day I couldn't be at Intermot thanks to the Belgian railroads who decided to have an all-out strike, I still managed to visit the Zero stand on Tuesday.
Reports were already out that Zero had successfully updated their main electric motorcycle, their new flagship, to not only look like a real motorcycle, but have the performance and range that would make this electric bike acceptable for general use.
The new Zero S has doubled the range of their bikes, under ideal riding conditions you can ride a good 220 kilometers (137 miles) on a single charge. And if you have the "S" configured with the rapid charging option (CHAdeMO - something you can always bolt on afterwards), the 95% full charge can be done within an hour.......

| 3 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: Kawasaki Z800 Launch (Video) | The first mayor motorcycle manufacturer to show their new stuff was Kawasaki, with their usual show & tell pony show. Lots of glitz, pretty dancing girls and new (updated) motorcycles.
The main event for Kawasaki was the launch of the revamped Z800, a mid-range streetfighter. As usual, Kawasaki made good use of dancing girls to promote the event.
Below is the video of the launch, but first, let's look at some photos I took.

| 3 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: BMW R1200GS Launch (Video) | BMW are on their home turf, and had therefore the most anticipated press conference of the Intermot motorcycle exhibition. We all knew BMW had a lot of new stuff, so there was a lot of interest in their press conference.
I managed to arrive early and score a good place to enjoy the show, since that was what it was. The main part of the BMW dog & pony show was the launch of the water-cooled R1200GS motorcycle. To do that, they put up a real show, with live music and "stunts" performed on the new motorcycle.
Here's a video of what I saw. I apologize in advance for a) some of the sound, since the music at times was sooo loud it deformed the sound on the video and b) a bit shaky at times, since I did not know where things were going to happen .. you'll see in the video.

| 3 October, 2012 - Intermot2012 and Me | If you've been following my tales of woe on Twitter or Facebook, you'll know that I had to leave the Intermot exhibition a day early, since the railroads in Belgium had a strike planned for Wednesday, the day I was leaving to go back to France. Since I had a not-to-be-missed appointment on Thursday morning, I decided to cut the press-day in Intermot short by half a day and catch the late train out of Cologne to Paris.
This means that apart from 3 press conferences, I was not able to see much else. I did do a quick walk about, but in a hurry. I'll be posting a few impressions of the exhibition in the next two days, but it will not be what you've come to expect from me.
It's become a disastrous trip, costing me a lot of money, since the hotel room was pre-booked and paid, but that's life I guess.
So I'm sorry if you were expecting more from this site, I hope to make up for it in Italy next month at the Eicma exhibition.

| 1 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: This Is What It Looks Like - Size-wise | For those of you who have never visited one of the truly enormous motorcycle exhibitions, German Intermot or Italian Eicma, will never understand how humongous these shows are. They are world's biggest, by far, and if you walk at a normal pace, walking through each walkway/aisle in the enormous halls, you'll have walked a lot. In fact, you'll have walked some 30 to 50 kilometers (18 to 31 miles). This means that if you plan to visit one of these motorcycle exhibitions, and you only have a half or a whole day, you'd best plan ahead and mark who you want to see, because if you are going to stop and see stuff at a stand, you'll never get out of one hall.
In the photo below, you can clearly see the Intermot exhibition center in Cologne, Germany. To get an idea of the size, just look at the bottom part of the photo; you'll see cars there, so you can imagine the size for a human being. Most of the halls are chock-full with motorcycles and their accessories.
It's difficult to show you how big this is. Visitors I have shown the show from abroad always come back with amazement at the size.
So think of me running around the aisles with my backpack with cameras, computer and the press kits...

| 1 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: 2014 Dates | The German Intermot motorcycle exhibition hasn't even started yet, since press-day is tomorrow, and the show starts for the public on the 3rd of October, but already the Germans are planning ahead with their next exhibition; 2014 (remember that Intermot is held every 2 years, alternating with the French show in Paris).
So if you are going to miss this year's expo, and never have attended but want to, you can start planning your pilgrimage trip since the next one starts on the 1st of October 2014 and ends on the 5th of October. So 2 years from now.
That's what I call planning ahead.

| 1 October, 2012 - Intermot2012: European Motorcycle Market Review - ACEM | Despite the economic crisis affecting the European motorcycle market, signs of recovery are at hand. The analysis of recent market trends highlights that urban mobility and passion are still acting as main drivers of the motorcycle market. While some segments have suffered from the impact of the economic downturn, sales of light Powered Two-Wheelers (PTW) specifically designed for city trips indicate a growing interest in this mode of transport. The relative good performance of engine capacities over 250cc confirms that passion for motorcycling is still a key factor pushing customers toward this vehicle category.
On behalf of Intermot Cologne ACEM, the European Motorcycle Industry Association, conducted a review of the most recent motorcycle market trends comparing the Moving Annual Total of the past year (September 2011- August 2012) with the same time frame a year before, which allows for a reliable representation of the “seasonal effect” closely linking the PTW business to the weather conditions.......

| 1 October, 2012 - At Intermot 2012 - How To Follow Articles | If things have gone as planned, I should have arrived at the German Intermot motorcycle exhibition. It's one of world's biggest motorcycle shows, so there's going to be plenty to see. This year is a bumper year, with many new models being launched.
Unfortunately, the organizers have crammed press conferences back-to-back, and since I'm on my own, it's going to be near impossible to rush to the press center to show you what's being launched. There just isn't enough time. Not even for lunch. It starts at 08:30 and ends at 20:00.
I will however be posting photos during the events to my Facebook and Twitter accounts listed below, so if you follow those, you can see things happening as they happen.
You can also just follow the exhibition RSS feed from this site in your favorite News reader, but these are going to be few in the beginning until I catch up.
I wish event organizers would leave some time in-between so that we could file stories and photos during the show.

| 24 September, 2012 - Intermot 2012: What Can We Expect | On the 2nd of October 2012 starts the German Intermot motorcycle exhibition, one of world's biggest expos. In many enormous exhibition halls, world's main and minor motorcycle manufacturers will be displaying their best gear.
Usually between Intermot and the following month's EICMA we get to see all the latest motorcycles models, and often many of the new accessories. Manufacturers wait until one of these two mammoth motorcycle shows to launch their new models. Of course in today's electronic society with TV and internet, where every person and his dog has a phone-camera, it has almost become impossible to hide new bikes from the public; ALMOST. Sometimes a manufacturer manages to truly hide their new efforts and surprise us when they show the new model. Let's hope this will be the case in 2 weeks time.
What can we expect to see, and from who - the only question is when (Intermot or Eicma):
Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Moto Guzzi, Peugeot, Suzuki, Triumph, Yamaha, Zero

| 31 July, 2012 - Ad: Sandiego Motoshow 2012 - Not Macho | Usually during motorcycle exhibitions, shows and photos, pretty & sexy girls are placed before the motorcycle. Just to dress them (the motorcycle) up, and make them more noticeable.
But not in the advertisements for the Sandiego Motoshow 2012..... there it's the other way. The motorcycles are there as the main event, even blocking the view of the pretty girls. And it is Sandiego, not San Diego, since this one is in the Medelin area in Colombia, and it's a shopping center

| 11 July, 2012 - Intermot 2012: Dates | One of the biggest, in fact 2nd biggest, international motorcycle exhibition, the German Intermot, is scheduled for the 3rd of October until the 7th of October this year. Held in Koln (Cologne), some 110,000 m2 are reserved for this motorcycle event.
6 halls will be showing motorcycles, scooters and their accessories, with every manufacturer worth its salt presenting; amongst others Harley-Davidson, Honda, Ducati, Kawasaki, KTM, Triumph and of course on their home turf, BMW. In total over 1,000 exhibitors from 40 countries.

| 30 May, 2012 - Lebanon: First Motorcycle Show To Open | Lebanon has been a country that has been ravaged by wars and internal struggles for decades. Once the Cote d'Azur of the Middle East, with beautiful women, fast & expensive cars and motorcycles, great food and fun for all. But over the last 10-15 years, Lebanon has rebuilt itself towards its former glory.
Beirut, the capital, is now a big city at peace with itself. Impressive buildings have been erected, crowded restaurants can be found everywhere, beach side entertainment, discos and more importantly, the "People" have come back.

| 30 November, 2011 - The Paris Motorcycles and Scooters Exhibition 2011 | The French motorcycle exhibition, the "Le Salon de la Moto" opened its doors after 4 years absence. What used to be called the "Mondial", and what was a real international motorcycle show, has turned into a small provincial exhibition.
Apart from a few minor new things, the show was lackluster. Placing it after Eicma makes it even look worse.
Here's a few photos I took, after a big struggle to be let in.

| 28 November, 2011 - On My Way To The Paris Motorcycle Exhibition 2011 | I'm on the way to the Paris motorcycle exhibition, the "Le Salon de la Moto" 2011.
They've been not active for four years, thanks to the financial crisis, but now are back with a vengeance.
Hopefully, there'll be some new motorcycles, but I doubt it..

| 22 November, 2011 - Intermot 2012 Dates Released | World's second largest motorcycle exhibition (after EICMA), Cologne, Germany based Intermot has released the dates for the next show:
Intermot 2012 will be held 3 to 7 October 2012. Good idea for a holiday...

|
| 22 November, 2011 - Motorcycle Exhibition Tickets: Brazilian Style | What a great idea those Brazilian people had. Instead of sending paper tickets to people attending a local motorcycle exhibition, they sent a self-adhesive, nonpermanent, motorcycle tattoo.
The tattoo is really a bar code, which can get scanned at the gate. So you "wear" your entrance ticket. Very nice idea.

|
| 15 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: Wrap Up | This is the final article on Eicma, world's biggest motorcycle exhibition. 500,00 visitors made it an enormous success.
Here's a photographic impression of the show, all the motorcycle that caught my eye.
See you next year...

| 14 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: 91 Pretty Girls and 3 Handsome Guys - Part 2 | Here is the second part of the pretty & sexy girls of Eicma, and for the girls, the last three are guys. A total of 49 photos.
That's it for me for this year for the Eicma 2011 motorcycle exhibition. It's been a very tough one, lots of press conferences crammed into a too small time frame, not enough space to work and pretty bad management. But at least the pretty girls made up for it. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it... right?
I hope you enjoyed the tour of Eicma; next motorcycle exhibition is at the end of the month in Paris, France.
|
|
| 14 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: 91 Pretty Girls and 3 Handsome Guys - Part 1 | The only reason we go to motorcycle exhibitions like Eicma is not to see the new motorcycles and scooters, or all the new equipment, but to see the demo dollies, the stand hostess and in general, all the pretty girls.....or at least, that's what a lot of people think.
Every year, the motorcycle exhibitions try to outdo each other with the prettiest and sexiest demonstration girls, and this year at Eicma was a bumper year.
There was one motorcycle manufacturer who realizes that woman are an important market, and as such had several "handsome" guys sitting on motorcycles, and the company is Honda. So for the ladies, I've included in part two, three photos of guys.
|
|
| 14 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: Police Confiscate Motorcycles | The Chinese manufacturers are known to rip-off copies of almost anything under the sun, and fake motorcycles are the norm there. But they are becoming more and more brazen about their rip-offs, so much so that they actually tried to market their fake Piaggio MP3 scooters at Eicma.
Piaggio pressed charges during the Eicma exhibition, and the police came and took away the fake models.

|
| 14 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: And The Prize For The Worst Product.. | Eicma is an incredible motorcycle exhibition, with 1000's of products on display. It's motorcycle porn to an extreme, and you could stay there for days and still not see all the products.
Many products are incredible, and would be great at home, but you'll also find some products that you go .. gulp... Here's one.

|
| 11 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: Demonstrating The MotoAirBag - The Video | I showed you a photo earlier on how the folks at MotoAirBag demonstrated an airbag jacket for motorcycle riders. Quite an unconventional approach.
I returned to their stand, and asked for another demonstration, but this time I made a short video. They used a demo-girl from another stand as the unsuspected victim... poor girl.
Here's the video on how to demonstrate a motorcycle airbag jacket.

|
| 11 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: The Electric Motorcycles | Every year at Eicma there are more and more electric motorcycles and scooter manufacturers.
This year so a lot of them, though many are cheap Asian bikes, there where however several players in the market.
Here's a round-up of the more interesting electric motorcycles and scooters.
|
|
| 11 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: Marco Simoncelli Tribute | Eicma had in very little time turned the world's largest motorcycle exhibition into a tribute to the late Marco Simoncelli. Everywhere you walked there were enormous posters hanging with SuperSic's face, and the words "Ciao SuperSic".
Nice touch, and good to see that they responded so fast.
|
|
| 10 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: Rumors | Eicma is where you see all the product announcement and launches. But if you pay attention to what's going on you can see other things that are not announced.
For example, is BMW looking at doing something with Brammo??
And is Piaggio and Royal Enfield looking at doing business in the nearby future.
|
|
| 10 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: Hells Angels | It's the first time I see on such a big event a rather large stand used by the Hells Angels. Their Italian chapter was present at world's biggest motorcycle exhibition to show what they are.
They weren't looking for members, nor were they trying to sell something, it was just pure an information stand. Quite a lot of people were attending, trying to see what they did.

|
| 9 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: MV Agusta and the Museum | MV Agusta, as we all know, is not only a super fast and sleek sportsmotorcycle, but a very good looking one; sexy, sleek and pretty. In fact, most MV Agusta motorcycles belong not only on a race track, but in a museum.
That's probably why the company decided to showcase their motorcycles in a museum style display at Eicma. You had to enter in one area, exit in the other. The halls are all pristine white, and all their motorcycles are displayed like works of art, works of art that they are. Indirect lighting, corridors, hushed talking; it all reminds you of a visit to a museum (if you ever do).
Here are some of the "works of art": |
|
| 9 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: How To Demonstrate An Airbag Jacket | Here at Eicma, you see many manufacturers trying to sell their stuff. Motorcycles are easy to sell, but there's stuff out there that you need to push, and I really mean push...
One of the items that you need to convince people with a real demo, is the Airbag jacket. Usually what happens is that they put one on, and then pull the cord (if it's a wired jacket).
The jacket inflates in nano-seconds, and you've become the Michelin man. But this demonstrator went one step further.
Once he had pulled the cord that inflated the jacket, he took a baseball bat, and slammed it with all his force against the unsuspecting man's back. The man did not even flinch.... quite powerful for a demo. I jsut hope for the demonstrator's sake, someone doesn't take the bat away and hits him.... |
|
| 8 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: A Funny Thing Happened | Every year, Silvio Berlusconi, the Prime Minister of Italy, opens Eicma (in fact, I've been told he owns the grounds). It's always a big thing, with 100's of operetta-dressed policemen walking around, drinking coffee, and watching the ladies.
This year, when I went to the press center, I saw 100's of journalists focused on one person. None of the photographers or TV people were from the motorcycle world, so they were political journos. I snapped this photos, and thought that in the middle, as usual, it's Berlusconi.
In the hotel, I just found out that he is resigning, and I guess this was a fact finding by some senior politician. The "normal" journalists were obviously waiting for the Prime Minister, and they were told that he is no longer coming.

| 8 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: KTM Presentation | KTM, for their presentation, rolled out most of the Champions and Toby Moody (from Eurosport TV) to liven up the event.

| 8 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: BMW New Maxi-Scooters | BMW introduced with a big ceremony their two new maxi-scooters, the 600 Sport and the 650 GT.
Only thing missing to make it a real BMW, is heated seats...

Here's what you can expect.

The photos are a bit blue, but that's because they used blue filters... sorry.

| 7 November, 2011 - Eicma 2011: Not Going To Ducati | Since the Ducati information got leaked this morning, and since the schedules are so tight, it's impossible to attend every conference, I'm planning to give Ducati a miss, and head directly to Honda.

| 4 November, 2011 - Packed The Motorcycle For EICMA 2011 And On My Way | Right, it's that time of the year where I'm heading for the long journey to Milan, Italy to attend world's biggest motorcycle exhibition, EICMA.
The motorcycle exhibition starts Monday afternoon and goes on until Wednesday evening (for the press). Monday morning will have an article or two posted to keep you busy until the press conferences start. Tuesday and Wednesday will be pot's luck, in other words, whenever I have time to post something while running around from press conference to press conference.
In the 3 days, I usually shed several kilos of weight (15 kilo backpack loaded with cameras and computer gear), and some 40 kilometers of walking.

| 3 November, 2011 - Video: BMW’s New Maxi-Scooter Promotion - Ready For Eicma | A very elaborate TV commercial just to announce that BMW will be showing their new maxi-scooter at the Eicma show next week in Milan, Italy.
This 50 second TV spot shows a little kids with a car and a motorcycle toy (both BMW, but what would you expect?). The funny thing is that they do not even show the shadow of the new BMW scooter, just the thought....

| 2 November, 2011 - What Can We Expect From Eicma 2012 | This year seems to be a very busy year with new and revamped motorcycle models to be presented at world's biggest motorcycle exhibition, the Milan based EICMA.
Here's a list of newsworthy stuff we expect to be seeing. ... and it's a lot.

| 30 September, 2011 - Paris Motorcycle Exhibition To Re-Open Its Doors | After 4 years, the Paris motorcycle exhibition "Le Salon de la Moto" re-opens its doors end November.
Cancelled because of the financial and economical crisis, and held every 2 years (alternating with the German Intermot), the French expo finally is on again with 375 brands and covering 3 halls.
