And you thought that by riding your motorcycle at the speed limit was safe! Not always. June 2009, a 79 year old driver, Andrew Cavanaugh, was driving his car through an intersection in Pinellas County, Florida. The posted speed limit is 25 mph, but the red lights were timed for passing through the intersection at 30 mph.

In other words, just before the lights turn orange, you can safely cross the four lanes at 30 mph before the opposite lights turns green.

Motorcycle taxis in France are finally better regulated.

Starting on the 1st of April, 2011, motorcycle taxis will require several certificate & papers (medical, maintenance, professional cards, etc), that are delivered by the local government.

Hopefully, this will sort out the cowboys from the serious operators, and make the motorcycle taxi more "accepted".

Not a bad Harley-Davidson TV ad. I don't know when this ran, but it looks recent. The message is clear, it's a bit like the motivation posters saying "you never see a motorcycle at a psychologist office".

The ad shows you many statistics of American trying to "feel" good, like shrinks, botox, self improvement even pedicures, but if you really want to feel good, but a motorcycle!

Just back from the Dakar, and Cyril Despres is already competing this weekend. And what a competition he racing in... he's racing in world's toughest motorcycle beach race, the Le Touquet Enduropale.

1100 motorcycles (800 quads) racing around like crazy for 3 hours in freezing temperature. Despres has won the holeshot in the past with a special motorcycle, but this year, he's going to compete for the whole distance.

21 January, 2011 - Poland: Speed Limit Raised To 140 KPH, But 150 Possible
Poland, in a wise move, has raised speed limits for cars and motorcycles on their motorways to 140 kph (from 130). On normal dual carriage ways, the speed limit was raised by 10 kph as well, to 120 kph.

What's more interesting, is that the Polish government has stated that you are allowed to speed by 10 kph without being ticketed, in other words, you are allowed to ride 150 kph. But at 151 the ticketometer starts running.

One of the biggest motorcycle museums in Europe has reopened its doors in Germany. Located inside a spectacular 16th century castle, not only can you see some of the oldest motorcycles in the world, but you can also stay in the castle, and eat in one of its two restaurants.

This area of Germany has 10 castles in its immediate vicinity, plus many hotels and hostels, and the scenery is to die for.

After a visit by our colleagues from the Dutch motorcycle news site, NieuwsMotor, they discovered some interesting new motorcycles in development.

New modular Adventure motorcycles, probably a 1200, a 1000 and a 700-800 engine, with the smaller one having more off-road capabilities.

A new bigger SuperDuke with Traction Control. and more.... but you'll need to wait. Introduction will be end 2012 for model year 2013.

It's over for another year! The Dakar finished today in style, with Dutchman Frans Verhoeven winning the final stage.

Poor Chilean rider, Chaleco, who was in a good overall third position, broke his motorcycle, and is no longer on the podium.

Marc Coma wins his third Dakar, and Cyril Despres ends in 2nd overall. Helder Rodrigues on his Yamaha finished 3rd.

KTM's dominance in rally races has remained untouched, despite the 450cc rule. 8 KTMs made it to the top 10. One Yamaha and one Honda make up the rest of the top 10.

The Dakar is back in Argentina, and is close to being finished. The time difference between the two top KTM motorcycle riders, Coma and Despres, is still very small. Onemishap could upset the balance.

Stage 10 was tough, specially for last year's winner, who lost a good 7 minutes on Coma. Faria, on his KTM came in 3rd.

It's really too bad, but it was pretty predictable. The lonely 2-stroke Bultaco motorcycle had to abandon his attempt to finish in this year's Dakar rally.

Ignacio Chivite, the Spanish rider, was exhausted after 2 nights without sleep and many mechanical problems. He had started making mistakes that could cost him his life, so he stopped at stage 6.

This is a first! On one of the toughest (and biggest) beach motorcycles races in the world, the French Le Touquet Enduropale, with 1,000 motorcycles racing on a 17.8 kilometer beach circuit, one of them will be an electric motorcycle.

A Zero MX electric motorcycle will be raced in this 3 hours race by Thibault Veuillet from the Craze-Team. The electric charge should last for one lap, so he'll need to come in every lap to swap batteries, but the bike itself should be very fast over the sand.

The race will be held the end of the month.

Was speaking with a contact at ASO (the Dakar organizers), and not only will the Dakar most probably continue next year in South America, but apart from Argentina and Chile, it will also include Peru.

They may even go as far as the capital, Lima.

So, no return to Africa for the time being, and an extension of the route.

Women have been riding motorcycles for quite some time now, but it is only recently that Harley-Davidson has woken up to that idea.

Now Harley is promoting females riding motorcycles, and here's one TV ad to prove it.

It's for a 50cc scooter, so nothing to write home about, but has a nice electronic tune to it.

Will the 450cc rule finally kill KTM's dominance, or are they that good that they'll win again. This time there were less KTM's in the Top 10.
