30 December, 2011 - Happy New Year 2012 To You All
Ivy Grown Motorcycle
I hope you all have a great New Year, and that 2012 may NOT be the end of the world (or at least, let me have my birthday first, since the end is predicted to be after my birthday on 12 Dec).

Wishing you health, wealth and loads of friends to enjoy it with. Let's hope you get to use your motorcycle everyday of the year.

I hope you enjoyed this year's efforts in amusing & entertaining you with motorcycle and scooter articles. Maybe one day the ad-blockers will be removed from this site so we can start paying the bills...

Enjoy the end of the year parties, drink in moderation, and have loads of fun. I'll be back on January 3rd, since on the 2nd I'll be having a dental operation (good way to start the year).

Have fun, and see you next year.

Cool. The Belgium government finally went back to work, after some 2 years of a government-less country, and they immediately announced that they are financing the 2012 FIM/Monster Motocross of nations race to be held in their country to the tune of €250,000.

Not a bad way to make yourself popular with the motorcycling community.

Adventure Road Indonesia
This looks like a real challenge to ride with an off-road motorcycle, let alone a cheap streetbike/scooter.

29 December, 2011 - France: Fake License Plates On The Rise
French License Plates
With the French government coming down very hard of speeders, the number of fake or false license plates in circulation has increased 19% last year, and probably much more this year.

The only way to escape hefty fines on your motorcycle nowadays is to use someone else's license plate.

But you can spend 7 years are the guest of the state for doing it...

28 December, 2011 - Yuk! A Real Rat Motorcycle
Rat Motorcycle Vietnam
From all the rat motorcycles and scooters out there (many seen on this site, see related articles below), this has got to be the real rat bike. No doubt about it.

... and to think they eat the creatures....

28 December, 2011 - Switzerland: Tougher Traffic Laws - Prison Sentences
Swiss Cheese Speed Radar
Switzerland is getting serious about speeding and dangerous driving, be it cars or motorcycles. It used to be a matter of money, from the speeding fine. That was it. Now it's more serious....

You can now expect a jail term of between 1 and 4 years.

Do you think they serve Swiss cheese and chocolates in Swiss jails?

27 December, 2011 - Ads: Yamaha Financial Services
Yamaha Bank Fazer Chart Brazil
Yamaha Bank XVS Chart Brazil
It's not an easy task to make an advertisement for a bank or financial services targeted at motorcycle riders. Most bikers just aren't interested in them. The FAM agency in Brazil did a pretty good job, producing ads that are for financial services geared towards motorcycle and scooter riders.

The company is Yamaha Bank, meant to give out loans to bikers wanting to buy a motorcycle or scooter. Instead of boring financial charts, theirs shows a bike. Nice touch.

27 December, 2011 - Electric Scooter Made Out Of Linen
Citi Ek o
French research & development group, Citi, showed at the last Paris motorcycle & scooter exhibition, their electric scooter concept, named ek'O.

The interesting things that set this electric scooter apart from others, is that the frame shell is made out of linen (resin), and that it used only 15 parts, instead of the traditional average of 50 parts.

Performance is that of a 125cc, and they expect to be selling it by 2013 at a street price of €5000.

27 December, 2011 - Greece: Rain, Motorcycles, Umbrellas
Umbrella Pillion Greece
You see this often enough on news stories coming through the internet.... people riding in rain on a motorcycle holding an umbrella. You ask yourself how the heck they do it?

Or is this a 1 second photo, because in the 2nd second, either the umbrella has blown away, or the pillion has, or both.

26 December, 2011 - Video: Why Riding A Self Made Motorcycle Is Not A Good Idea
Video clip
Tinkering on your motorcycle is one thing, but making one is another. Just have a look at this video, and you'll see why not.

Or maybe, this should be entitled "why riding off road with a street motorcycle is not a good idea".

Unfortunately, 13 people died during the explosion of a pipeline.

Michele Bachmann Motorcycle Museum
Candidates to the US Presidential elections can't escape it! They need to be seen on a motorcycle, even if it's just posing on one. Has sitting on motorcycles become the 21st century kissing-a-baby?

I don't follow much the politics of the candidates and I doubt she rides a motorcycle, but one thing is for sure, she sure is the prettiest of them all...

Korea Santa Claus Scooter Parade 2011
You'll find Santa Claus on motorcycle parades every where in the world. Even countries where Christmas is not a traditional holiday, you'll see them. Here's a nice photo of a Santa parade on scooters in Korea.

If I read the Korean correctly (thank you Google Translate), these are electric scooters. Not a bad way to do a motorcycle parade; no noise, no pollution, and you can hear the crowds cheer!

21 December, 2011 - India: Scooter Sales Explode
Statistics Article
It's not doom & gloom in every country of the world with regards to scooter and motorcycle sales.

India has seen an incredible sales explosion of scooter (+39%) and even motorcycles, with "only" 22% increase.

The increase is so dramatic, that manufacturers can not cope, and have enormous backlogs. Customers have to wait for months to get their ride.

Maybe India should outsource the production to Europe and North America.... ?

21 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Silver Colored Motorcycle Necklace
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
Well, this is the last 2011 Christmas gift suggestion. If you've not found anything, you're out of luck.

This is a pack of 4 silver color chains with a colorful motorcycle dangling on it. It's not small, so this way anyone can see what you're into.

On top of that, it's not expensive. If you hurry, you can have it at home for Christmas.

21 December, 2011 - Dakar2012: David Fretigne Not Starting
David Fretigne Husqvarna
Dakar logo
It's a real pity for the Dakar race. One of the very few motorcycle racers who could have made a stab at the monopoly of Cyril Despres and Marc Coma for the leadership, is Frenchman David Fretigne. But alas, David was badly hurt in an accident 2 years ago, and already had to renounce the 2011 edition of the Dakar. But unfortunately, the doctors did not deem him fit enough to race in this grueling race. The sawbones stated that if David would make a heavy fall (which almost every Dakar racer will do during the race), he might risk a life-long paralysis. So the Husqvarna rider will have to sit out the race for another season. Pity.

20 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: GS Stamped Watch
Chronograph with GS logo
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
For all the many BMW GS fans around the world, and there are a lot of them, here's a chronograph watch, stamped with the Beemer GS logo, or as they call it, the coat of arms, that will make an excellent gift.

The watch is stainless steel, with a big face so that you can see it while riding your GS motorcycle. As a BMW rider, you don't have to worry about rain, since the watch is water-resistant up to 5 atm.

The watch comes in a nice silver box.

20 December, 2011 - If You Are Reading This, I Have Not Made It Home (Yet)
Flying pillion on BMW motorcycle
If you are reading this, it means I have not made it home/office yet. It probably means (I hope) that I have been detained in traffic, and am racing as hard as I can on my motorcycle to get back.

If not, I'm in jail somewhere....

20 December, 2011 - Heading Back To The Paper Mountain - HELP
Help lots of paper work
If things went right, I should be heading back to the office, to face my paper mountain which accumulates when you're gone. Normal programming will resume shortly.

If not, I'm stuck somewhere in the world in a God-forsaken place.

20 December, 2011 - Video: MTV - Sex Is No Accident - Vespa
Video clip
A kind of funny TV commercial from MTV, warning people that sex is no accident, and to wear a condom.

To make their point, they've used a nice animation of a girl on a Vespa scooter, who by accident gets in to a "sex" situation. The ads were made by the Gray agency in Germany.

Dream on if you think it'll happen to you....

19 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Harley-Davidson Motorcycle - Share
Harley Davidson Share
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
You might lust after a Harley-Davidson motorcycle but can't afford one. Or you could be a proud owner of a Harley, and want to make sure you are reminded of your ride.

Or maybe you know someone who has a Harley, and this is a great gift for Harley lovers.

It's a single share in the Harley-Davidson company. The real share can be purchased on its own, or better yet, framed. Remember, if you go and buy shares in Harley via a stock broker, you'll never see the paper work. It's all done electronically, so you'll not have anything to hang on your wall. This is a real share in Harley's stock.

19 December, 2011 - Video: Honda Wave Dash - My Secret Obsession
Video clip
Honda logo
It's not easy to market a small displacement scooter to adolescents and teenagers, and Honda are trying it very hard with their Wave Dash.

In this TV commercial the guy is more interested by the motorcycle than the pretty girl, until she goes for a ride with him, and everyone is happy.

Bland? You betcha, but I guess it works for hormone-filled teenagers.

19 December, 2011 - You Know You Are Drunk When You See This
Crooked road lines
You know when you see this, you shouldn't be riding your motorcycle...

16 December, 2011 - Motorcycles And Their Computers
Motorcycle Computer
Technology has become a big part of motorcycles, they are used to control everything except the steering part (and that'll happen one of these days). They control engine, ABS, suspension, windscreen, etc.

Thankfully, the computer technology has shrunk enough to make them not noticeable. But one manufacturer is struggling to keep the computer technology down to a manageable size....

16 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Motorcycle Slippers
Motorcycle Slippers
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
You're going to look soooo cute wearing these slippers in the morning. While sitting at the table, drinking your coffee, you can be racing these two motorcycles with your feet.

The outside is made out of polyester, the inside is made out of cotton.

16 December, 2011 - You Know Those RVs Towing A Car...?
Honda Gold Wing and Trailer
You know those RV vehicles that, part from being humongous, are also pulling a car?

Well, the motorcycle world has its equivalent, the Honda Gold Wing and motorcycle trailer. Only thing missing on the Gold Wing is the bathtub.

15 December, 2011 - When You Start Seeing Pink Fairies On Motorcycles, STOP
Pink Fairy
If you're out riding your motorcycle, and start seeing pink fairies on their scooters, better stop. ...

.. you're either very tired, or drunk.

15 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Ugly Goggles
Ugly Goggles
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
Sometimes ugly can be pretty, or at the very least, useful. This is a case of ugly but useful.

The Ugly Goggles are incredibly ugly, but one thing is for sure; they'll hold the wind from your eyes.

The goggles are foam lined, so soft for your face, and they have air vents preventing the goggle from fogging up.

15 December, 2011 - France: Campaign Against Souping Up Mopeds
Cyclo Debride
If there's one thing that bothers the daylights out of me are teenagers racing around on souped up mopeds. Many are 2-strokes, with their exhaust removed, and they race around town and villages, often with their helmets loose on their heads. ... and the noise is ear splitting.

Many of these kids get involved in accidents, often with terrible life-long consequences. Mopeds are limited in horsepower and speed, but what the teenagers do is modify the engine to give them more speed. The first thing they do is remove the exhaust, often put in a bigger carburetor, and the more mechanically inclined, rebuild the engine.

According to the statistics from the French government, 37 teenagers are involved in bad accidents daily. On top of that, they not only face a fine of €135, but in case of an accident, the insurance will not pay up if the moped has been modified. So the parents are out of pocket, often for a lifetime.

To try to change their mindsets, the government had recently launched a publicity campaign. The photo below is exactly the way these kids ride their mopeds, trying to keep down wind resistance.

15 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: iPhone Motorcycle Case
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
Got an Apple iPhone 4 or 4S? You lucky devil....!

As you know, it's better to protect your expensive mobile phone, and especially to prevent antenna reception problems, you'll need to put a case over the phone.

This bumper case specially made for the iPhone 4 and 4S is decorated with a motorcycle on the back. What more do you want?

14 December, 2011 - Christmas Motorcycle Ornaments
Xmas Tree Scooter Ornament
Xmas Tree Scooter Ornament
Most of us already have decorated our Christmas trees, but normally speaking, the decorations are going to be the same as every year. Stars, balls, maybe an angel or two, so a bit "same shit, different day"...

But with these ornaments you can hang a bit of your passion on the tree.

Two scooters, one on its own, and one with Santa, will do fine on your Christmas tree. At least some of your personality will be hanging in the tree.

14 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Adjustable Bungee Cord
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
We've all had to haul something on our motorcycle one day or another. And since our rides aren't pick-up trucks, at least most of our bikes, you'll need to attach the "something" to your motorcycle.

Enter the bungee cord. Since it stretches, it's easy to tie around whatever object you need to carry. But on the flipside, if the bungee cord is too large, you either have to try another wrap around, or, if you have this adjustable bungee cord, you just adjust the length you need.

Nothing is simpler to bring it along. Adjust the length of the cord, snap into place, and off you go.

14 December, 2011 - WTF Of The Week: Pope Fined For Not Wearing Seat Belt - In Popemobile?
Popemobile In Germany
So weird it's got to be true....

The German pope is being sued by a German resident for driving around Germany in his popemobile WITHOUT wearing a seat belt.

This could result in a fine of €2500, but luckily for the pope, the lawsuit got thrown out.

Maybe he should try riding around on his Ducati motorcycle without a helmet..

14 December, 2011 - Video: Sym 250cc Motorcycle Ad
Video clip
Sym logo
The Taiwanese motorcycle manufacturer Sym, is trying hard to diversify their product range, away from low displacement scooters, moped and motorcycle, to (slightly) bigger motorcycles, notably the 250cc naked. Asia is big for 125 and 250, and many manufacturers are seeking entry into this very lucrative market, and Sym is one of the recent ones. Here's a TV commercial for their T2 250 (which I believe is now called Wolf SB250Ni ... but then I can be wrong).

13 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Motorcycle Cufflinks
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
Even if you've got to go dressed up in your suit and tie, or even a black tie, you can still show the world that you are into motorcycles.

All you need to do is put on these motorcycle cufflinks, even on a dress shirt. It'll look cool, and the world will know what you stand for.

Is it cool or what?

13 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Motorcycle Tie
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
Those business meeting get boring, with all the suits dressed the same. Especially ties are usually bland, and only the most daring will wear a colorful tie.

So why not spice up the office life by wearing a motorcycle tie? Not only will thing look better with a tie full of motorcycle drawings, but everyone will know what you love.

It's not only a great gift, but also a nice novelty.

13 December, 2011 - Ads: Drink and Drive Australia
Ad Tac Drink Drive Margarita Australia
Ad Tac Drink Drive Tall Glass Australia
Getting people to not drink & drive, whether it's with a car, motorcycle or truck, is difficult enough. Getting advertisements that will make people think before turning the ignition key of their vehicle after a few drinks is very difficult; in fact it's a real art.

Ads that make people think need to send an instant message to their brains, and to do that, you require a certain creativity. Unfortunately, these two TAC ads lack that. It's not a message that will make you think "hmmmm, let me get a taxi".

The art work is nice, but honestly, would that stop you from getting on your motorcycle after a few margaritas?

13 December, 2011 - Gone On Assignment - Car and Motorcycle
Burn out on a car
Sorry folks, but I got a rush job for a magazine, and have had to leave in a hurry, back hopefully on next Tuesday. I've quickly assembled some articles to keep you busy, but not as much as I normally post.

Since I'll be out of touch with the internet most of the time, I'll not be able to check new stories coming in.....

12 December, 2011 - What Happens To A Motorcycle Once It Has Died?
Motorcycle Graveyard
There are all sorts of rumors floating around on what happens when a motorcycle dies.... some say they reborn as a Harley, others say they go to a motorcycle paradise where they can ride the twisties everyday.

But according to researchers, when a motorcycle knows it's going to die, it heads for a place where they lie down, and peacefully go to sleep..

12 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Beer-Can Chicken
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
As biker we love drinking beer. I guess it's part of our genes, riding motorcycles and drinking beer. It doesn't matter if you're a woman or a guy, we ride and drink. Preferably we ride our motorcycle to a place where we can drink our beer.

But we also love our food. So here's a Christmas gift idea.... a recipe book that involves chicken and beer.

The book has 75 recipes using beer as one of its main ingredients, but not all are beer or chicken related, there are "normal" recipes. The book was written by Steven Raichlen, America's barbecue guru.

The recipe cook book contains 326 pages, enough to keep you cooking for a long while.

Indian Army Ring of Fire Jump 2011
Every year it's the same, but still it's impressive.

Jumping through a ring on fire while burning yourself is indeed not for the many...

9 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Motorcycle Tire Pressure Gauge Key Chain
Motoress tire Pressure Gauge
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
As motorcycle riders, we know very well why keeping your motorcycle tires correctly inflated is not only smart economically (since it saves gasoline), but more importantly, it's a lot safer.

Ideally, you should check your tire pressure every day, since pressure vary depending on the outside temperature, and badly inflated tires can cause serious accidents.

Here's a great Christmas gift for any motorcycle rider. Motoress's tire pressure gauge on a key chain! You can never forget the tire pressure gauge if you put your motorcycle's ignition key on it.

9 December, 2011 - Italy: Massive Fuel Tax Hikes
Pumping gas
Italy is under financial pressure thanks to a previous government mismanagement of the economic crisis, and now the public has to pay the price...

Fuel taxes have been added 3 times already this year, and now the 4th tax makes Italy the most expensive country to buy gasoline in.

With these gas prices who can afford to ride a motorcycle, let alone a car?

9 December, 2011 - France: Police All Seeing Strobe Light
Police All Seeing Beacon Strobe
The French cops got a new high-tech toy to play with, and to fine us with. It's a fully automated strobe light, that has 4 video cameras hidden inside, recording everything we do continuously, and then the onboard computer analyzes it.

It'll be used to track stolen cars & motorcycles, but also to fine you for not wearing seat belts, using your mobile phone, not stopping at a stop sign, picking your nose, etc.

... someone got to pay the €17,000 for this new toy...

Its price is steep too.... US$112K... gulp.

8 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Motorcycle Mailbox
Motorcycle MailBox
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
If you're a proud motorcycle owner, you might as well show it to the world.... by placing this motorcycle shaped mailbox instead of one of those boring US Postal Service mailboxes.

Don't worry, it's approved, so now anyone and his dog will know you're into motorcycles.

8 December, 2011 - Dakar 2012: The Figures
Dakar logo
The world famous, or notorious, race, the Dakar, is a few weeks from starting. It's probably the most famous rally race, for cars, motorcycles and trucks. Video and photos of the incredibly tough race are seen throughout the world. The race is still being held in South America, despite calls of many to return to its roots in Africa. But the South American race holds many supporters, particularly the locals in Argentina who are all race mad.

Here are some of the figures and statistics of the Dakar, race. Notably is that there are a lot less KTM motorcycle taking part.

8 December, 2011 - France: Motorcycle Thefts 2011
Stolen Motorcycle Just Chain left

7 December, 2011 - Xmas2011: Scooters For Small Kids
Christmas Shiny Ball 2011
Christmas is really for kids, though us adults love it as well. But essentially, it's for kids. So here's a learning toy for children aged between 3 and 6 years. It's from Kiddimoto, and it's a wooden scooter, available in Blue or Pink.

The scooter is meant for children to learn to ride a real bicycle, so no training wheels. There's no chain, nor pedals, so no place they can hurt themselves.

7 December, 2011 - WTF of the Week: Motorcycle Cage Patent
Motorcycle Cage Patent
Motorcycle Cage Patent
Sometimes you got to think what people want, but sometimes you over think. That's the case with this recently filed patent....

It's a patent for a cage around a motorcycle! The cage "protects" the rider, and to ensure that the rider stays in the cage, she/he is attached via a harness (shoulder and seat).

I think you'd be better off in a real cage...

7 December, 2011 - Egypt: Dangerous Cargo and Pillions On A Motorcycle
Egypt Gas Canisters and Pillions
I guess if you got to do it, you got to do it, but bringing several passengers, plus a dangerous cargo on your motorcycle is not a smart thing to do.

But then, if you don't have a choice....

6 December, 2011 - Bikini Makes The Scooter
Magda Sayeg Crochet Scooter
This is a case of clothes makes the man, or in these photos, the bikini makes the scooter. Both photos are from Magda Sayeg, an artist who knits. When you have a look at her site and blog, you'd almost think it's a mad cartoon character who knits whatever she sees. She's knitted benches, buses, bridges, stairs, railings, walls, you name it, it's been knitted.

So it's no surprise she has also knitted scooters

You can use it with any 3.5mm compatible audio device (MP3, CD player, iPhone, etc).

6 December, 2011 - Ads: Goodyear - Do Not Break The Vase
Goodyear Vases Brazil
Goodyear logo
Here's a nice and a so-so print advertisement from Goodyear tires made in Brazil. The first one speaks to me, showing you why a Goodyear tire will keep you in your trajectory without hitting the vases. The second one is like the first, but doesn't really speak to me. Made by the Y&R PR agency in Brazil. Clever images though...

6 December, 2011 - France: President Sarkozy Does Not Like Bikers
Breathalyzers bag
President Nicolas Sarkozy has last week declared war on many things, but most importantly, on motorcycle riders.

He has announced several drastic, and often stupid, measures, like mandatory breathalyzers in every car in France starting next spring..

But the worst was his statement on motorcycle riders. He's convinced that bikers are the reason so many people die on the French roads. He calls them "Human Bombs"!!

6 December, 2011 - Europe:  IMCO Vote on Type Approval Legislation
FEMA logo
FEMA tells us that the European Parliament are putting things in place to make our lives much more difficult when riding a motorcycle.

Maybe they have a few good points, but the bad points far outweigh the good ones.

Here's the press statement from FEMA.

5 December, 2011 - Know You Alcohol Riding Limits! There Is An App For That
Alcootel testing
Alcootel smartphone app
Knowing whether you are at the legal limit to ride your motorcycle is quite easy if you have this app.

Made by the French insurance company MAAF, it'll ask you a few questions, and then tell you if you can get on your motorcycle. Available for a large variety of smartphone, and on their web site.

Or you could just blow into your mobile phone, and it'll tell you you're drunk (or you need mints).

Egyptian Family on motorcycle at protest
Are they brave, stupid or dedicated about their freedom... riding with so many on a motorcycle during protests can be any of these choices.

I choose for brave and dedicated.

5 December, 2011 - The Netherlands: Happy Sinterklaas
Sinterklaas on a motorcycle
It's Sinterklaas (Sint Nikolaas) back in my old country, the Netherlands, a time that gifts are exchanged, and pranks are played. It's a typical Dutch happening, with, like at Christmas, families gather and exchange, often funny, gifts.

Poems are read, and Sinterklaas, a "wise" old man who lives in Spain and is surrounded by black (Moors) helpers, gives good children the gifts, and bad children are taken away in their big bags.

Normally, Sinterklaas comes riding into town on a big white stallion, but he has been spotted on a motorcycle once or twice.

Victory 1700
Motorcycle taxis usually use Honda Gold Wing as their workhorse, but since they are expensive to purchase, the operators are always looking for alternatives.

Here's one operator that has tested the Victory 1700 motorcycle. This is his view...

1 December, 2011 - Electric Motorcycles: The Case For KLD Energy Technologies
KLD Motor Stator Blocks
Electric motorcycles and scooters are becoming better and better; faster, more range and cheaper. The last Eicma motorcycle exhibition showed that.

But electric engines in motorcycles is a "new" technology (though they have been there for decades). While still many manufacturers use "older" technology, something that has been available and unchanged for generations, one company is making a new type electric engine for motorcycles and scooter.

That company is the Austin, Texas based KLD Energy Technologies. Engine, batteries and controller are all designed in-house with new, much more efficient technology, and reduced owner cost.

Here's an overview of what KLD can do for the motorcycle world.

Philippines Journalists on motorcycles
It's not only motorcycle journalists that ride motorcycles, but also "normal" journalists.

The more the merrier...though in this case, killing journalists is not cool.

1 December, 2011 - Switzerland: Riding Without Motorway Tax Will Cost Double
Switzerland Road Tax 2012 Sticker
Riding your motorcycle in Switzerland without the annual motorway tax sticker is going to cost you dearly. Even as a foreigner, and even if you are only on the motorway system for 10 minutes, you need to pay the CHF40.

But starting today, if you get caught riding without the tax sticker, the fine is now double... from CHF100 to CHF200 (some $220).

So be aware...
