Dakar Rally 2007 Stage 2: January 7th, Portimão - Malaga
Liaison : 15 km - Special : 60 km - Liaison : 425 km
Total : 500 km.

THE HONDA EUROPE TEAM HEADS FOR AFRICA INTACT !

There was no sand today, but the mountain track was windy and bordered by a treacherous ravine. Today’s special was technical, with several twisty sections and other parts that were very slippery.

Thierry Bethys managed to complete the section in sixth place in both the overall classification and in the 450cc class. The Portuguese rider Paulo Convalvez suffered a fall yesterday, but was classified seventh in the 450cc class, while the Chilean rider Francisco Lopez finished in 10th place (450 cc).

All the Team Honda Europe riders arrived in the mud of this dangerous special stage and placed their Hondas in a support truck to take the equipment to Malaga and onwards to Nador in Morocco.

Tomorrow, the real adventure begins. Team Honda Europe faces the perils and uncertainties of Africa !

THIERRY BETHYS
THIERRY BETHYS

THIERRY BETHYS
(FRANCE) N°85 : « Yesterday, we were in the sand and it was a ‘cup of tea’ but, today, it was very technical and slippery. I missed a corner and found myself in a dyke filled with water. Then, I fell again in the grass at the stage finish. It was nothing too serious, but I lost some time. That aside, I am pleased to be here ! »

PAULO CONCALVEZ
(PORTUGAL) N°33 : « I am feeling much better than yesterday. I don’t have any recurrences from my crash and the grip was much better…I rode carefully because it was dangerous and I  really want to arrive in Dakar with a good result. »

FRANCISCO ‘CHALECO’ LOPEZ
(CHILE) N°34 : « There was a lot of dust and I broke a foot rest on a stone. So I finished the stage carefully. I wait to arrive in Morocco and Africa with impatience but serenity. »

HENK KNUIMAN
(BELGIUM) N°11 : « I really liked this special stage and I was amused. But, at the stage finish, I had a small fuel problem. »

MICK EXTANCE
(UNITED KINGDOM) N°29 : « My Honda 450 is perfect and works really well. I was pleased in the special. I am happy to have finished the two European special stages without problems. Now, we will attack carefully in Africa. »

TEUS VISSER
(HOLLAND) N°82 : « I have carried out training on this track. I know it very well and I was very happy. But I was also careful. There are a lot of riders on the track, in the woods or the dykes. It was easy to make mistakes and have a fall in the ravines, so I rode without taking any risks. »

GREGOIRE BLONDEL
(FRANCE) N°83 : « It was very dangerous and very slippery at certain points when the surface changed. I left the track and fell on a tree stump. But that is okay. I was happy to reach the finish.»

EVERT KROON
(HOLLAND) N° 208 : « It was very slippery and, despite taking care, I fell in the water. But all was okay and my Honda 45o is perfect. »

THOMAS DE BOIS
(HOLLAND) N°173 : « It was very nice and I was impressed by the twisty and slippery stage. I rode relatively slowly because there are many riders in the ravines and I stayed calm. I was happy to reach the finish and to take the boat to Africa.»

ERIC PALANTE
(BELGIUM) N°122 : « All is working well. But, 30km after the start I snapped the chain guide. I touched the sprocket and it broke the chain. I had to change it and lost some time. But that is the Dakar. It was not serious and if you had told me yesterday that I would do that I am happy to go to Africa !»

ALLAN ROBBIE
(SCOTLAND) N°129 : The Scottish rider finished the special stage well-placed, despite losing a lens in his glasses and finishing the special with scotch tape holding it in place.
