As was the case in last year's edition, the Dakar race is faced with another fatal death of a famous motorcycle rider. 41 year old Australian Andy Caldecott died instantly after a crash in today's stage. He was riding on a fast surfaces and suffered a bad crash.
Andy had been put in the KTM team at the very last moment as a substitute, and had been riding very well. He was in 10th place overall.
This puts a damper on the race. My sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed.
