Dakar Rally 2007 Stage 3: January 8th, Nador - Er Rachidia

Liaison : 205 km - Special : 252 km - Liaison : 192 km
Total : 649 km

FRANCISCO ‘CHALECO’ LOPEZ LEADS THE 450 BIKES AND TAKES 10TH POSITION ON THE STAGE ON HIS HONDA !

After a short night spent on the boat from Spain, bound for Morocco, the competitors set out into the first African spcial stage between Nador and Er Rachidia in sunny and cold morning conditions.

The special, 252km in length, demanded concentration from the riders, because the tracks were twisty, while other were covered in large rocks and some were fast. It was quite easy to lose the correct track and fall into a number of holes and traps hidden in the dust.

For his first African Dakar adventure, Francisco ‘Chaleco’ Lopez reached the finish of the stage in first position with his Honda in the 450cc category and in 10th place in the overall stage classification, behind the best riders in the ‘Open’ class.

FRANCISCO ‘CHALECO’ LOPEZ
(CHILE) N°34 : « I am cold, » explained the Chilean on arrival at the bivouac in Er Rachidia. « I had a little sleep last night on the boat during the crossing and I was on the road at 05.30 hrs this morning. What rhythm ! The tracks were not all like those we find on the Rally of Morocco. Some were a little similar, but I know that I have to wait to see the dangers ahead. There was a lot of dust and dangers. It was important to really concentrate. I rode wit a good rhythm, fast without taking risks. Yesterday, I began to have a fuel feed problem in the fuel tank, but I did not want to think about this during the stage. But now I will be able to repair it. »

HENK KNUIMAN

HENK KNUIMAN
(BELGIUM) N°11: « It was a nice journey, but hard and very long… I was cold in the night on the boat and on the liaison section but the special stage was beautiful. It was necessary to pay much attention because there were many stones. As far as PC1 it was not too fast, but next we were able to push against the bigger bikes. The last 80km were very dangerous, but all worked well, no accident and no problems. »

THIERRY BETHYS
(FRANCE) N°85 : « It was very hard today because I had to acclimiatise myself to the navigation. I do not have much experience and the information in the road book is not to clear for me. I found a regular rhythm not to commit any mistakes and without taking any risks. »

PAULO CONCALVEZ
(PORTUGAL) N°33 : « I had a small problem with the carburettor today and my engine was not working well. And I lost my way for around 10km. Tomorrow it will be a better day. »

MICK EXTANCE
(UNITED KINGDOM) N°29 : « It is good to find the real Dakar tracks, but it was dangerous today and, so, I rode cautiously. The route to Dakar is long and I must maintain my concentration. »

ERIC PALANTE
ERIC PALANTE

ERIC PALANTE
(BELGIQUE) N°122 : « I was before the last this morning. The start was hard work because I am like a diesel. It takes me some time to get into my rhythm. There was a lot of dust and I had to pass about 100 bikes, but I did not make them all today ! It seems that I have taken a good place in the overall results because I do not want to arrive in the night with the cars…. »

GREGOIRE BLONDEL

GREGOIRE BLONDEL
(FRANCE) N°83 : « With my misadventures yesterday, I left the start a long way behind this morning…150th place. I managed to climb up the leaderboard well but the terrain was very tricky. I needed to pay attention because there were a lot of stones and rocks. »

EVERT KROON
