Yamaha YSR 50 moped
From this Yamaha
Yamaha YSR 50 moped
To this turbine moped
Building jets into motorcycles is something that we've seen before. There's even a commercially available jet powered motorcycles available {link}. But here's an even more crazy idea. Build a turbine engine in a Yamaha YSR-50 moped !!

Bad Brothers Racing are trying just that. They're documenting the conversion in a comprehensive step-by-step series of articles. It looks like their biggest problem was finding a Yamaha moped...

They're not finished yet, but have started testing the turbine engine. So who knows, maybe shortly, Jay Leno will find some kid riding his turbine Yamaha next to his turbine driven Y2K motorcycle....

The next thing you'll see is instead of these souped up moped with their screeching noise, there's going to the grumble of a turbine when the kids play around the neighborhood.

the YSR 50 is a full tilt motorcycle, with clutch, shifter, etc.

Technically, a moped is a hybrid motorcycle-pedal bike

so these guys have a GREAT project, turbine powered YSR. But it is NOT a moped.

    thanks

Depends on maybe where you are, but over here the definition of a moped is anything under 50cc. So for me, it's a moped.

I used to have a 50cc moped, with 5 gears and clutch.

    Not a moped.

    MO-tor + PED-al.

    No pedals, no moped.

Thanks for putting us up on the site! I have to add to the comments here about the bike being a moped. Although it is technically a full motorcycle, and not a moped, I have no objections to it being called a moped. Moped is the designation many localities give small motorcycles, and it can be a blessing in disguise. Registering a moped is much easier, although there are a few limitations to what streets you can ride on. Obviously, you will be told not to try to ride a moped on the highway. My YSRs are registered as motorcycles, but the average kid would probably be better off registering as a moped. Some communities do register anything 50cc or under as a moped. I guess it just depends on where you live and want to ride. Question though. Would it still qualify as a moped with the jet engine in it? Thanks for viewing the website, and I'll keep the updates coming!

    re: Jet Powered Moped

Hi Russ. Thanks for your comments. To me, moped is now in generic land, ie, like people say "I'm goign to Xerox this paper" on a Canon copier, or "I'm Hovering the rug" with a Philips.

Moped has become a general term for any PTW under 50 cc. Now in your case, I'd say your turbine doesn't have cyclinders, so I guess it could classify as under 50cc, so technically, you're a moped. ;-)

Quebec law classifies a vehicle with 2 or 3 wheels and an engine displacement of less than 50cc equiped with an automatic transmisson as a moped or scooter requiring no liscence to drive if you hold a regular drivers liscence (or 6d wich can be obtained at 14 years old).

p.s the transmission restriction is not very strictly inforced... there are 6 speed manuel race "scooters" around (aprilia rs 50, derbi gpr50, ect.).

Can you send full details about this and other gas turbine powered motorcycles of all times?

I've heard about the Y2K and one very bizarre thrust powered bike using an airplane engine with a so strange Y shaped exhaust duct... are there others?

Please answer soon and have fun!

    Chuck
