Dakar Rally 2007 Stage 5: January 10th, Ouarzazate - Tan Tan
Liaison : 170 km - Special : 325 km - Liaison : 280 km
Total : 775 km.

‘CHALECO’ LOPEZ SECOND OVERALL IN THE 450 CATEGORY AND THREE MINUTES BEHIND FRÉTIGNÉ !

After spending the night in the first Marathon bivouac, that is to say without service support, the motorcycle riders reached Tan Tan in southern Morocco, not far from the Atlantic Ocean.

Last night, the motorcycle bivouac offered a very convivial atmosphere. All the riders worked on their own bikes and ate together. It was a superb bivouac in the ‘bike’ spirit.

Today, the special stage to Tan Tan was rocky and treacherous. Francisco ‘Chaleco’ Lopez found a good rhythm and reached the finish in second position in the 450cc category and seventh in the overall results for the stage in front of his friend David Casteu.

Conçalvez also rode well to finish the stage fourth in the 450cc category, followed by Knuiman in 7th, Bethys in 12th and Extance in 13th.

Tomorrow morning, the riders will leave very early, at 04.30 hrs, to reach the ‘wall’ that separates Morocco from the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, before embarking upon the first Mauritanian special stage.

FRANCISCO ‘CHALECO’ LOPEZ
(CHILE) N°34 : « Yesterday, there was a lot of dust at the start of the special. I rode for a while with Frétigné, then a little more slowly to safeguard my bike and to prevent any mechanical problems.  Today, I rode hard without any risks as far as the refuelling point, then, at the finish, I attacked with a margin of error and I was pleased with the result. I am never at my limit except when I overtake a rider, then I refind a rhythm and settle again. »

HENK KNUIMAN

HENK KNUIMAN
(BELGIUM) N°11 : « It was a beautiful special today in the mountains, with the hills at altitude and the big descents and then the fast sections at the finish. But there were also a lot of stones and I was careful and paid careful attention not to fall off the bike. »

THIERRY BETHYS
(FRANCE) N°85 : « I did not have a chance today, because after 15 kilometres, my GPS stopped working. When I saw that I had missed some hidden waypoints, I was stressed and began to ride badly. But, thankfully, the organisation saw that I had a problem with the GPS and I have not received a penalty. »

PAULO CONCALVEZ

PAULO CONCALVEZ
(PORTUGAL) N°33 : « It is a good journey for me. I have not had a single problem except for the fuel problem that took some days to resolve. It was a twisted fuel pipe that restricted the flow of the fuel. Today, I rode in a good pace, a little faster than the other days. I will continue the same, with care, to ride as one of the 15 fastest riders, that is my goal. »

MICK EXTANCE
(UNITED KINGDOM) N°29 : «It is a route where I am very happy at this stage. There are always many rocks, but I like that. It is like my home region. There is equally less dust and so it is easier to overtake the other riders. »

The other riders had not arrived at the bivouac in Tan Tan as we closed for press.
