Not really a motorcycle news story, but then, what the heck, it's a slow news day! Finnish telephone manufacturer, Nokia, are planning to produce a special telephone intended for kidnap victims! My idea was that this could well be of interest to those long distance adventure riders who take their motorcycle into difficult and dangerous countries, where being kidnapped is a real possibility. What's so special of this mobile telephone, is that when you are under threat and/or being kidnapped, you turn your GSM telephone "off". But, it's not really "off", it's just pretend "off". Are you following me here ??? So if one of the kidnappers looks at your phone, or even takes it away, it looks like it's turned off. The screen is in-active, and no lights or battery. But in fact, it's very much alive; it's making photos, videos, sound recordings and at the same time records GPS location information. All that information gets stored until the telephone discovers a GSM signal, and then sends out the data to some alarm monitoring central. The information then gets sent to the authorities. Sounds nifty. So if you're planning to ride your motorcycle in Iraq, Afghanistan, Columbia or downtown Detroit.... here's the telephone for you. Oh yeah... it does work like a normal telephone !
