Neobike reports on an article found in NY Times (you need to register to access) .. In Cambodia, where there is little money and even less telecommunication infrastructure, the local schools have come up with a novel concept for allowing their students to send and receive emails. The schools have a computer that is connected to a storage device. The storage is in its turn connected to a wireless (wifi) transmitter. All this is powered by solar panels. Once a day, one of five specially equiped motorcycles pass alongside the school. The motorcycle has a wifi device and storage. The motorcycle communicates with the school's computer, uploading and downloading email messages. Then at the end of their schools run, the motorcycles gather in the provincial capital of Ban Lung and upload all email messages into the main school's computer system, where they are transmitted via satellite into the internet. This allows the schools to exchange emails with the world, but they have to wait 24 hours before getting a response. A very novel approach of connecting remote villages to the net!!
