The United Kingdom Police Force has had since 1997 a successful motorcycle education program called BikeSafe. This initiative is run by Police forces within the UK, and has as objective to pass the knowledge the Police force has gained on to the English motorbiker community so that they can become more competent and safe. The ultimate goal is to reduce the road casualties. BikeSafe runs several different programs throughout the United Kingdom, and also sell a video tape explaining the ins and outs of motorcycling. Participants to their programs can have their riding techniques assessed by the Police, or they can learn motorcycle maintenance and roadcraft. BikeSafe also run two day workshops. The BikeSafe web site offers also other pointers: - Group Riding Techniques (link)
- Defensive Riding ( link)
- Roadside First-Aid (link)
- Protective Clothing (link)
- Tires and Tire Safety (link)
Personally, I'd much more prefer this solution that the one in France, where the Police will fine anything it can get its hands on (however, the Motorcycle Police in general will leave you alone). I would not mind to go on ride outs with the Police, and let them tell me what I'm doing wrong. Even after some 30 odd years riding motorcycle, I still can learn things.
