Here in France, as in some other European countries, the government has created a points system for your driving license. Break a traffic law, and you loose points (or in other countries, gain points, depending on the system used). Once you've reached your quota of points, you loose your driving license. The driving license is total, meaning you loose ALL your licenses. So, if you get caught several times driving your car over the speed limit, you not only loose your car license, but also your motorcycle license, and if you have one, your truck license. The driving license points taken away in France is staggering. With the new automatic digital radars multiplying themselves faster than rabbit bunnies in severe heat, you can easily go over a speed limit, even by a fraction, almost anywhere in France. No where is safe ! The Ministry of Interior have published the annual statistics: | | 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | | Fines | 1.685.560 | 2.550.501 | 3.590.254 | | Points withdrawn | 4.458.497 | 6.442.669 | 7.461.475 | | Licenses withdrawn | 20.967 | 39.413 | 54.242 |
The figures are not cumulative ! According to the "officials", the figures are not bad, since they state that 80% of drivers in France have never been deducted any points, and that only 2 out of 1000 drivers have lost their license. On the positive side, according to the government, between 2001 and 2005, the number of deadly accidents dropped 35.4% ! What they don't mention, is that last year there were 54.242 additional drivers riding around without a driving license, or there were the equivalent amount of people without a job (it's difficult to have a job if you can't get there!). When you loose your driving license, you loose it for a maximum of three years !
