Switzerland is a strange country... wealthy, super clean and very restrictive ! The Police are not there to prevent problems, but are there to make a lot of money for the state. Traffic fines, specially speeding fines are so normal in Switzerland that people don't even think about it. There's no point system, just money... lots of it. Speed cameras can be found in almost every village, behind signs, or in impossible to see places.
Switzerland needs its many speed cameras, and since most GPSs today have a built-in database of fixed speed cameras, and you will be warned by your GPS that you're approaching one, the authorities have decided to ban GPSs ! Simple approach.
To be accurate, a GPS is allowed, but not if you have a speed camera warning database built-in (like TomTom, Garmin, Mio, ViaMichelin, etc). If the Police think you're using one, they'll stop you, take away your GPS (and destroy it) and then give you an extra fine. Since most modern GPSs have such a function it means GPSs are illegal in Switzerland.
How incredible is that ? Why would anyone want to live in a country with so many strict laws ??
