Here's an interesting device from German electronics giant, Siemens. They've produced a device they call AySystem. AySystem is a box the size of a deck of playing cards that monitors data and communicates. In essence you can tell it to monitor position, sound, and other data. Once a preset level is reached, it will tell you.
The way AySystem communicates is via GSM text message (or even voice), or directly to a web server. The AySystem communicates via GSM/GPRS. Since it's connected to the mobile networks, it also means it can use optional position tracking services, and tell you exactly where it is. Alternatively, you can hook up a GPS, and get a very accurate fix. The AySystem will then tell you lon/lat coordinates, plus all other relevant information. You can also attach a digital camera. Usages are numerous. From the obvious ones described on their website (baby monitor, health care, fleet management, etc), to more motorcycle related. You can for example use it was a motorcycle or personal alarm. Once the motorcycle is in motion, it can send you a text message with the position it finds itself. Or you can track it yourself on the website. The website can be customized. Or if you're planning a RTW trip, or just a visit to a remote location, your friends and loved ones can see where you are at any moment. You could also imagine a more sneaky application, monitoring your spouse.... nasty... The AySystem devices has integrated sensors for motion temperature and sound. It includes a microphone and loudspeaker, and even has a "panic" button. Nice... no price known as of yet. It should be offered by mobile carriers shortly. Click here for more information.
