There really aren't that many great books written by adventurous motorcycle riders. You can count them on one or two hands. That's why it nice to see a recent book joining the small circle of great motorcycle adventure books. It's even more interesting since this one was written by a woman. Carla King is a travel journalist, and a fellow MBI blogger (read her blog, Motorcycle Misadventures). Carla has travelled extensively around the world on her motorcycles, visiting exotic places like China, or recently, the Adriatic sea (on a Guzzi). But instead of writing about far away and exotic places, Carla has written a book about a motorcycle trip she took in the USA; On a Russian built Ural sidecar, she travelled to all corners of the States. The Ural motorcycles were still under development, and she was the test rider! Imagine going on a long distance ride, with a motorcycle that has teething problems. Her book, called American Borders, is very well written, and easy to read. It takes guts to ride alone in any country, and Carla has it! She writes about the problems she encountered, the people she met and the places she has seen. It's anything but boring, and when you get the book, you can expect to be turning pages so fast, you'll loose track of time. Lots of humor, specially concerning the Ural motorcycle. When the book arrived, I had to fight my wife to read it first. Thank God I'm big and strong... The book is right up there with Neil Peart's Ghost Rider, Christopher Baker's Mi Moto Fidel and Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (which Carla uses for quotes). I highly recommend this book. Click here to access her site, and buy the book.
