I guess we all know the famous and notorious Dakar rally, but few have heard of two African rallies that have always been the training grounds for the actual Dakar race. The Optic2000 rally is held in Tunisia, while the Orpi Maroc rally is held in Morocco. Both are open for amateurs motorcycle riders, and will give you a great introduction to desert racing, including dunes riding and navigation.

If you're interested, you can apply on-line (in English) at the organizer's (NPO) website. If you want to ride the Optic2000 race, better hurry since enrollment finishes on the 17th of March (the actual race starts on the 7th of April in Nice, France).

Budget will be less than €10,000, depending on the transport of your motorcycle, and the options. If you're a professional, it'll cost you more.

If you're interested in the Orpi Maroc race you've got a bit more time. End date of enrollment is May 8th, while the race starts 30th of May

You can count on a budget of about €10,000, depending on how quick you register, and your location.

Want to watch the race ?

If you want to watch the race up close and personal, but can't be bothered to ride your motorcycle all the way to North Africa, the organizers have a VIP tour package that will get you there without the effort.

Optic2000

You fly from Paris or Marseilles to Tunisia, and you'll be driven in a 4x4 truck. You'll actually sleep in the bivouac, maybe in the tent next to Cyril Despres, Marc Coma or any of the other stars (hope you don't snore). You'll actually be wining and dining with them, while the chauffeur driven 4x4 car brings you from action point to action point.

The trip is not for the whole rally, only for the last 3 days. The total trip length is 5 days, including the flight days.

Cost: €1,750 per person, including flights from Paris or Marseilles.

Orpi Maroc

The same applies for the Orpi Maroc race. If you want to, the VIP package will fly you to Morocco, drive you around in a 4x4 car, sleep in the tents in the bivouacs, wine and dine with the stars.

You leave on the 2nd of Junes, and you'll be back on the 6th.

Cost: €1,750.
