Bicycles have got it hard. They've got to pedal, and thereby spend a lot of energy, and on top of it, they are in a dangerous position. They don't have the power to get out of a potentially dangerous situation, and no one can hear them coming. Well, that's about to change, if Sound of Motion have got anything to say about it. They are producing a bicycle computer application which runs on Java enabled mobile phones, with a Bluetooth connection. The supply a motion sensor which gets installed on the bicycle's wheel. The sensor records speed, acceleration and distance, which is displayed on a console. So far, not really of any interest. Where it gets interesting, is that the sensor together with the application, set in motion a sound simulator. The sound simulator plays MP3 sounds through a mini- amplifier, and according to the speed and acceleration, varies the sound. Select the sound theme (currently available are a Harley, a horse or a steam train, though you can produce your own). When you pedal away, you hear the sound of a Harley starting up and riding away. Check out the video. You'll see and hear a Harley and a horse. To me, it sounds like the Harley is running a bit rough...maybe you got to pedal a bit harder (insert Harley jokes here....)
