As we all know, the price of petrol has gone up in the last few years. So much so, that you really need to shop around to find a gasoline station that has lower cost fuel. For that purpose the French Government has recently opened a website with the current price of fuel at most gas stations in France.
The site, www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr, though in French, is very useful. Not only will it tell you the actual price of black gold, but also opening hours and facilities.
But the site is in French, so not much use if you can't read French. So, here's a quick translation so you too can figure out what it's going to cost you to ride in France, and where to fill up the tank of your motorcycle.
In the main screen,select first the type of fuel you'll be looking for. "Gazole" is diesel, "SP95" is lead free. Unless you're riding a diesel motorcycle, select SP95.
"Cherchez un commune", means search for a city/town or postcode. If you are looking for a specific city, enter the city (in this example, I'll use the Normandy city of Fecamp).
"Selectionnez un departement" is a wider search, and allows you to look for prices in a department (state). For example, Upper Normandy is divided into three different departments, Fecamp being in Seine-Maritime. You'll need to know a bit of the geography of France.
After entering the "commune" or "departement", click on "Validez".
NOTE: They are working on the possibility to enter an itinerary, allowing you to see where you can stop to tank up cheaper. It's not ready yet, but will be shortly.
The results are displayed with the cheapest fuel first. You'll see the city, the name of the station, the fuel supplier, the price per liter of the fuel requested, the date of the last update and finally you can add a particular station to your favorites.
If you click on the name of the gas station, you'll get more details about the station:
From top to bottom, you'll see the name of the station, address, city, and opening days/hours
If the station is closed on specific days, it will show "Jour(s) de Fermeture" (Lundi=Monday, Mardi=Tuesday, Mercredi=Wednesday, Jeudi=Thursday, Vendredi=Friday, Samedi=Saturday, Dimanche=Sunday).
The last line shows you which services are offered. I think the most important one is if the station has an unmanned pump. This icon shows that the station can be used with a CB card, but watch it; not all VISA credit cards are enabled with the French CB system. Check with your bank if they are accepted.
NOTE: Not all gas stations are in yet. Some of the smaller ones are still be to added.
