Yesterday, Michael Schumacher has won the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award. Congratulations ! However.... the other sports people he beat included the likes of Lance Armstrong, and others, but more importantly, he beat Valentino Rossi !!! This is where I ask myself;- How can a guy like Schumacher, who has been driving the best Formula One car around for several years and has not really had to go beyond his sporting limits, earn a prestigious prize like this. He's coasting..... Truly, a person like Valentino Rossi, who not only has many world championship titles, but has proven that with a motorcycle that's not the best in the field, he can still win races. And when he does win a race, like he did in South Africa, he showed the world that he was riding a motorcycle at 150% of his own capabilities. For me, that shows the true sportsman.... not only the best in the field, but also capable to enhance the viewing pleasures of millions by demoting himself to a lesser motorcycle and still win races. But I guess big money wins!! F1 is more popular (and it doesn't deserve it), therefore there are more sponsors, therefore more money, and therefore the people in that sport earn the prizes, which in its turn gains more viewers, which results in more sponsors and the circle is complete. If Schumacher had 50% of Rossi's sportsmanship AND showmanship, F1 would be a sport I'd watch. But alas, it's not, it's boring, and still they get the medals... it's just not fair !
