The Department of Film and Media studies of University of California (UCSB), together with Harley-Davidson, are running a contest for aspiring film directors to produce an Harley ad (judging from previous Harley ads that have aired, they need all the help they can get). There are ten "short" ads to select from ("short" is relative, since the shortest video is 2 minutes, some run 5 minutes). Your vote will help decide which is the best ad. Their project had the following rules: Films should be from two (2) – five (5) minutes in duration - Essential that the film reflect the Harley-Davidson lifestyle -- cool, thrill-seeking, independent, authentic, non-judgmental -- in the storytelling/imagery
- Main character(s), to the extent developed, must be law abiding
- Use of motorcycles is not required. If motorcycles are depicted, students will be solely responsible for securing them
- If motorcycles are depicted, the video must feature a Harley-Davidson motorcycle (custom choppers and other non-Harley-Davidson branded motorcycles can be depicted, but cannot be featured)
- If motorcycles are depicted, they cannot be used as weapons
- Images cannot be pornographic
- All image and sound rights must be cleared by the filmmaker and filmmaker must submit all clearances in writing
But remember; these are students.... not seasoned professionals like Spielberg, and they don't have unlimited budgets and staff. Also, every video is in Quicktime format, which can take ages to load, so patience. Click here to see the video and vote. (Thanks Marta - one of the contestants)
