There have been many tests and reports made on motorcycle pollution. In most cases, the outfit that produced the report had internal agendas.

For example, the Paris City Hall (Mairie) {link}, who want to get rid of all vehicles, have published tests that state that motorcycles pollute 2-3 more than cars.

Anyone with half a brain, knows that these tests are manipulated. The same can be said about tests run by motorcycle magazines.

Ademe (the French Environment Agency) has concluded a real test, with no bias. Not only did they compare apples with apples, but looked at the usage of cars and motorcycles in REAL LIFE circumstances.

They compared motorcycles (respecting the Euro 3 pollution norm) with cars (respecting the Euro 4 norm). But not only did they look at the pollution generated by the minute, they also looked at the time a motorcycle runs, compared to a car. As we all know, a motorcycle will do the same itinerary as a car in the city, in less than half the time. Add to that, that cars need to look for a parking space, you can see that a motorcycle will have its engine running less that 50% of the time.

For the test, they used a 125cc scooter and a 600cc motorcycle. Both scooter and motorcycle took 44 minutes to arrive at their destination (so no advantage for the faster and more powerful motorcycle). Both bikes were able to park immediately. The car took 88 minutes to do the same route (having to stop and go more frequently than the motorcycles), and then spent 15 minutes looking for a parking space.

With this data, they used the "model" for testing 14 motorcycles, from large ones (125cc to 1200cc, 15 hp to 106 hp), and 4 cars (automatic, diesel, high performance and normal cars).

Although the Euro 3 equipped motorcycles/scooters emit more CO2 that an average Euro 4 car, since they spend less time on the road, at the end, they emit less. End of story... no discussion possible. In the city (60%+ of all pollution occurs in the city), motorcycles pollute less then any car (except electric ones).

There... let's hope that this will put a stop to all those "environmentalists" who are saying that motorcycles pollute more than cars. It's RUBBISH !
