All countries have them; drivers that use their mobile telephone while driving their cars. We've all seen them on the road: zigzagging while holding the GSM telephone in one hand, cigarette in the other and steering the car with their knees ! The French are no different! The Minister of Security has performed a survey about driving and telephoning, and here are the results: 16% of drivers admitted to using their mobile telephone while driving during April 2006, compared to 11% in April 2003. This increase can mostly be explained by the increase in number of mobile telephones. Men below the age of 35 (24%), and women below 35 years (22%) constitute the majority of offenders. The age 65+ people only represented 6%. 23% of all people who drive & talk live and work in Paris, while 11% live in rural areas. 70% of French drivers know about the risks of talking and driving, while 92% know that there are big risks. 94% think that using the telephone without a handsfree kit is dangerous, while 84% think that even with a handsfree kit, it's still dangerous to talk & drive ! 82% of the French drivers do think that it is useful to have a mobile phone with you in the car, while 74% feel more in secure with it ! It's mostly the women who feel this way (77%) compared to men (69%). 98% of French cage drivers (and motorcycles riders) know it is illegal to drive with a phone in the hand !! So a) what are they doing about the 2%, and b) WHY DO IT ?? Click here to read the Adobe PDF document. (in French)
