Interesting Radar Warning System

As some of you may know, the battle against evil (=Radars) is at full burst here in France. However, the police has one major fight won against motorcyclists; anti-radar devices are illegal. In fact, having an anti-radar device is one of the heaviest penalties you can expect (on par with riding 120 mph in the city). And you don't even need to have it turned on, just having one is enough to have the anger of the Gods directed onto you.

Inforad
So it's really refreshing to see a novel approach to anti-radars arriving on the market. Irish company Inforad have come out with a legal way of ensuring that you don't get caught. Their approach is a small, cigarette pack size, device that is hooked up into the motorcycle (car) 12V outlet. The device is in fact a small GPS unit, but without a screen, plus three LEDs.

Radar
You download from Inforad's website the latest radar positions and upload them into the device. Once on the road, if you near a known radar point, the unit starts blinking a LED and will start beeping (not much use on a motorcycle). France, UK, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland are covered by the downloadable database. More countries are being added.

The unit is totally legal, since it doesn't "sense" radars, it just knows where you are, and where the radar unit is. It's like programming your GPS with all the radar position; that's legal too! Obviously it will not work with mobile radars, but you can program into the device the zones you know can have mobile radars.

Cost: 89£ (currently the launch price is 69£) - 135€ (launch price 99€) . You need to subscribe to the update service, costing you 36€ per year (first year is free).
