Stumbled upon an informative website produced by Italian Motorcycle/Scooter manufacturer Piaggio. The site is called Vespanomics, and it's centered around the Vespa scooter and the USA. It's not a sales site, they don't promote the sales of Vespas.
What they do, is give you a lot of food for thought. They show, by using statistics, why it's important to switch to two wheels, specially in a gasoline hungry economy like the US of A. According to the site, if Americans were to use two wheels (Scooters and Motorcycles) for 10% of the current mileage used, a total of 14-18 MILLION gallons of fuel PER DAY will be saved, and 324 MILLION pounds of carbon dioxide PER DAY will not have polluted our atmosphere !
The site further lobbies for special motorcycle/scooter parking spots in cities. They have a full program going on, including ads, and there's a petition you can sign {click here}. The petition is called Vespatition, and they state some compelling arguments. Have a read !
At the Vespanomics website they list the global best practices, i.e., the cities that are getting it right. Hopefully, it will give some inspiration for other cities.
So folks in the States; go and sign the petition, read all the things you can do to promote better parking in the cities, and spread the word. We're counting on you !
