This is quite a novel idea (to me at least). Team Momba (Mid-Ohio Moto Build Attempt) decided not only to race a vintage motorcycle, but to actually build it from scratch in the first place. It's not like they gave themselves a couple of months to do it. No.... 72 hours ! The way they did it, was buy all the parts at the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days July 28-30th at the Mid Ohio Sports Car course. It is the largest motorcycle swap meet in the USA, with over 1,000 vendors attending. By coincidence, it was also the place where they held the American Historic Racing Association's national road race... the one they intended to race in. The Momba Team started with a Kawasaki KZ550 LTD motorcycle cruiser, stripped it down from it's original state, and rebuilt it with parts sourced throughout the motorcycle swap meet. They changed parts of the bodywork, forks, wheels, bars, and anything they could get their hands on. The Kawasaki was in need for some major TLC.... For 72 hours, 12 people (8 guys, 4 gals) worked on restoring the old Kawasaki. They remodelled the cruiser motorcycle into a real race bike. With 1,000's of spectators, they managed to fully restore the motorcycle. The whole project was being run for charity, 20% of the donations made went to the American Cancer Society. Eventually, the motorcycle looked like this: The motorcycle was put to the test in the actual vintage race. Surprise !! They ended in 7th place ! Not bad for a motorcycle that was built on the spot, and had never been tried before. Is this going to be a new way of racing ??? When are you going to be able to see it on a TV show ?? (probably has already somewhere in the world). Click here for the full story. Click here to access Team Momba's web. (Thanks Greg L.)
