The Dutch ANWB Wegenwacht is a familiar sight to all travelling in the Netherlands. The ANWB Wegenwacht (literally translates to ANWB Road Guard) patrols all roads in Holland offering assistance to is members when their vehicle breaks down. It is the Dutch equivalent of the British RAC/AA or American AAA. Since they service cities as well, the ANWB need to move quickly and efficiently in cities that were never made for cars. Cities such as Amsterdam are usually clogged up (pun intended), and often cars have to wait a long time to be able to go through one of the canal roads due to cars unloading in front of them. Therefore, the ANWB have decided to use motorcycles to pass through clogged arteries and offer their prized assistance more efficiently and rapidly. They ride two brands of motorcycles. Initially, the ANWB started with BMW LT 1100's, but modified to suite their purpose (a bit like the Police versions). The motorcycles were painted the normal Wegenwacht bright yellow, and a series of instruments were added so that the riders could stay in touch with their dispatch and receive detailed instructions. Notice that the BMW motorcycle also have a hook in the back to be able to pull a trailer! Honda This year (2003), the ANWB has decided to broadened their motorcycle range with brand new Honda's ! With a quick glance you can not see much difference between the two bikes, specially due to the overpowering yellow color. But no matter what bikes they ride, if you're broken down alongside the road, they are more than a welcome sight (and even when you're not broken down)!! Note: Many thanks to the ANWB for sending me these photos.
