Although officially designed to ease congestion and traffic management, e-Plate uses are going to be much more oriented towards fining motorcycles. What is e-Plate ?? From the name you can probably gather what it is.... it's an electronic vehicle license plate !! Apart from the vehicle's visual license number, it can contain several electronic data that can be retrieved from a distance of 100 meters using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) technology. The electronic plate can transmit a 17 character number to the receiver, that can than access a database and retrieve all sorts of interesting data. Obviously it can be used to track stolen motorcycles, and that's good. Or even automatically cover toll roads without the motorcycle needing to stop. And that's good too. But is can also find which routes you're taking, how fast you're going, if you've paid your taxes, if you hit your spouse... etc... as long as they put RFID readers all around. And that's not good! We used to have an advantage over cages with most radars here in Europe. The speed radars often make photos from the front in order to catch to drivers face. With motorcycles that would be no problem since our license plate is in the back. Now, all they have to do is put a RFID reader next to the speed radar, take a photo from the front, read the license plate electronically (so even if you use PhotoBlocker or other license plate hiding devices you're out of luck) and you'll have your fine before you arrive home !!! Notice the example from e-Plate above is a Suzuki GSX motorcycle.....The battery used can last 10 years, so you will not run out of power for a long time. The new system is being tested in the UK at this moment, with the USA and Canada following the tests with close interest. I don't think I'm going to like this system....
