As most of you have probably heard by now, the 14 hostages have been freed that had been held by a terrorist group in Algeria. The initial batch were released in May (read my blog Most Disappeared Tourists in Algeria freed). Dutch motorcyclist, Arjen Hilbers (see in the photo) tells his tale of horror.
The hostages were all in different groups of adventure riders (four-wheel drive and motorcycles), and have been held for 6 months after having been intercepted by a group of motorcycle riding terrorists belonging to the Salafist Group for Call and Combat cell, part of Al-Qaida.
After a unsuccessful raid by the Algerian Army, the cell (consisting of 40 terrorists) moved camp and forced the group to walk hundreds of miles in to Mali. It was only after the death of one of the hostages, that the terrorist group decided to give up their captives.
