What's next ?? Seat belts ?? Oops, they already have them (BMW C1). Honda have announced yesterday they latest version of their two-wheeled car; the Honda 1800 Goldwing motorcycle.

Honda Goldwing motorcycle Airbag
In the impressive list of features, you'll find some "unique" items:
  • Honda Satellite Linked Navigation System(TM)
  • Fully integrated navigation system with color screen.
  • Available with or without ABS.
  • New 80-watt per channel power amplifier provides clear, crisp sound at all highway speeds.
  • New six-element speaker system adds two new rear speakers and a pair of front tweeters for a richer, fuller sound quality.
  • Cold-Weather Comfort
  • Five-position heated grips for cold-weather riding.
  • Five-position heated seat/backrest combination with individual rider and passenger controls for optimum comfort.
  • Foot-warming system channels engine-heated air over the rider's feet and is controlled by a fairing-mounted lever.
  • Industry-first fully integrated rider airbag on a motorcycle.
  • Airbag available only on full-featured version.
  • Slow-speed electric reverse system is engaged with the simple push of the thumb controls on the right handlebar.
  • Lightweight electronic cruise control system utilizes a 16-bit ECU-controlled, motor-actuated throttle mechanism.
  • The Gold Wing trunk provides 60 liters of storage capacity with an additional 5 liters of storage available if the optional CD changer is not installed. Two full-face helmets fit easily in the trunk. The saddlebags provide 40-plus liters of storage each, resulting in a total of 147 liters of storage space.
  • Specially designed luggage features a remote-control key-lock, permitting pop-open rear trunk operation; a remote lock/unlock feature for the trunk and the saddlebags; and a horn-actuated bike locator. If remote locking is attempted while a lid is open, the emergency lights flash to alert the rider.
  • Storage pockets are located in the fairing and rear trunk for convenient, easy-access storage.
  • Motorized headlight aiming system is operated by a dial switch located on the left fairing panel and provides 2.5 degrees of adjustment from level.
  • Large, 6.6-gallon fuel tank houses the PGM-FI fuel pump and provides excellent long-distance cruising range.

Can you imagine riding a "motorcycle" with an 80 watt sound system, 60 liters baggage storage, airbag, etc... only thing missing is the mini fridge..

But what's the story with an Airbag. Will it really help in case of an accident ?What happens when you ride over a big bump ??

All kidding aside, for what it's worth (before I get flamed by the Goldwing owners), I'd buy a Goldwing motorcycle in a New York minute... if I had the money. Riding on holidays, long distance, nothing beats a Goldwing. And I've seen a Goldwing run up and down the Dolomites faster than any sportsbike there. The guy passed Ducat's, Aprilia's, GSX, Haya's, etc, all that on a Goldwing motorcycle !!!

Gold Wing riders will know why, we should never cast doubts over Gold Wings...

We smile and say, nice and we should never say what we think and especially, never ask questions, and you've thought of all the obvious.

A motorcycle with an Airbag, nice.. .. ..

i think it's a great idea. just think, instead of sliding along bitumen or gravel after hitting a kangaroo, you'd be all safe and sound in your airbag!!

gold wing faster then sportbikes on dolomites

    HA HA HA HA HA!!

    what a crock.

i can't stop laughing......yea i'm sure a proper rider can beat some sportbikes with his goldwing. if he's really really good and the sportbike riders are hmmmm maybe 10 year olds? no i've seen some real squids on sportbikes that absolutely suck so anything is possible, but if a goldwing passed all those bikes they must have been pulled over. one i'd believe,,,,,to put manners on almost every performance bike......ha ha ha ha

Hard to believe maybe Dan, until you get passed. There's always someone faster, and this guy is known as the Rossi of the Alpes. He's Italian, and he works as a guide for motorcycles tours. He knows every bend, every curve.

In fact, I was struggeling with my wife riding pillion, and he took her over on his bike, and still he passed bike after bike. My wife said she could touch the ground in the curves, and sparks were flying from the skirtboards.

Several crotchrockets hit the ground when they were passed, and their egos were touched. They tried to overtake him, but at least 3 went down....

I don't need to have people believe it, I don't really care, since I was it. And so did many others who were with me. I setn a friend with him last year, and he tried to make a video of him, but did managed to stay behind him on his GS long enough to make a video clip..

It will save you from going through the windscreen, but what about the falling over bit once you've hit something? That airbag must be very inconvenient if you need to hop off the bike...

Air bags would be ok if you had your hands strapped to the handlebars otherwise you will probably get blown off the bike.

Spent 4 yrs riding the alps and with a goldwing passed many, many sport bikes and have met the Itialian guy and kept up with him for two passes. Also rode the French side of alps and came accross several crazy riders there and kept up with them to their amazement. No I been riding since 1960 and this was in the mid 80's so I had yrs of experience riding in many, many countries and long before dirt bike riding became popular we were doing it just for kicks. Then in late 60's and early 70's dirt bikes and tracks came into play.

I saw something discussing this very thing not long ago. The airbag is pretty much for when a cager pulls out in front of you. Instead of being propelled into the car head first (breaking your neck in the process), you're pushed up and over the car. The crash test dummy demonstration was pretty convincing and illustrated the point much better than words can. I'd much rather have the airbag.

How stupid is that! On a bike? Takes away the freedom of motocycling. I was going to buy a Goldwing but no way now! I'll stick to old fashion Harley-Davidson.
