We all do it;- on long motorcycle rides listen to music. Usually we use earplugs fitted with mini-loudspeakers, or use special loudspeakers that can be fitted into a motorcycle helmet. But here's an even more interesting approach. Nippon MNI has started selling bone conduction speakers for motorcycle helmets. Yes, you heard it right !! BONE CONDUCTION SPEAKERS !! These speakers are built from piezoelectric ceramic material, and conduct the sound through your bones. I've been told the sound is of a high quality using this method, and you do not get any noise distortion. There's an added advantage to using this technique. Bone Conduction is a two-way street, i.e., you can also talk and the speaker functions as microphone. This means that no matter how bad you helmet is, you can still hear music while riding down the strip and 100 mph !! The unit will go on sale for $50 next year in Japan. No plans are announced as of yet when this will be available in Europe or the US.
