Apart from riding my own motorcycles, there's nothing I like to see more is a woman riding a motorcycle. In the testosterone filled world of motorcycles, it's a breath of fresh air to see the ladies take to the bikes. Many women are starting riding their motorcycles, and it can only be good for the motorcycle industry in general. First, the PR and goodwill value increases, secondly, a more balanced motorcycle life is generated. I remember leading several "men-only" motorcycle tours, and it always ends up in a race. When the ladies participate on their own motorcycle, it's more a ride of passion, not racing. Not that they don't ride fast !! I know many women who can out-ride me at any time. MCIA, the UK based Motorcycle Industry Association have released their fact sheet on women and motorcycles. There are 3.5 million motorcycle license holders in the UK at this moment, 15% of them are female. Not all license holders ride motorcycles, so from the 3.5 million, about 1,5 million are active, 10-15% are female. And that number is growing.. The number of women who are taking their motorcycle test is growing: 2000/1 12,025 2001/2 10,434 2002/3 12,228 2003/4 12,784 20% of the females ride Supersport motorcycles, 18% ride Sport/Touring, 14% ride Custom, 7% ride Touring and 11% ride Off-road motorcycles. It's not young women who ride motorcycles (about 2%), it's the age group of 35-44 who do (about 32%). 28% of the women survey use a motorcycle as main form of transport. Interesting enough, 40% of the women use their motorcycle all year round, while only 33% of men do the same. When women buy a motorcycle, the first item they look at is price. Men look first at the brand/model. All-in-all they are interesting statistics. Click here to read the whole report. (Adobe Acrobat PDF format) US motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson even has started a campaign to convince more women to go and ride a motorcycle. There's even mention of fellow motorcycle bloggers Carla King and Sasha Mullins. Click here to read the Harley articles. Go ladies !!!
