Ewan McGregor Plans 2 More Long Way Trips

Actors Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman, from the "Long Way Round" RTW trip London-New York, are planning two more televised motorcycle trips.

Next year sees them riding from London to Cape Town, and will be called the "Long Way Down".

Then they plan to ride from Argentina to the USA, and call that the "Long Way Up". They will follow the same format as in their first documentary, ie, a whole support team following them, filming them, helping them and pampering them. I guess if you've got the means.....

Although despite all my "negative" writing about the reality show of theirs, they have done the world of motorcycling a lot of good. More people have been exposed to the positive side of motorcycles then ever before.

The MBI association even awarded Mc Gregor the "Thumbs Up" award, due mostly to his TV series that generated a lot of goodwill.

Have to agree on the "pampering" bit. I was a little disappointed to see that when I read the book. Plus, they had a lot of sponsorship. That said, they really did log the hours mounted and, as you say, they brought us a lot of goodwill. I'll gladly take another 2 installments.

I too was disappointed at the lack of reality with the Long Way Round series. But I watched it again, and decided it was more of a culture story. Metro-London types that clearly had a change in thinking that wouldn't have been possible behind the windows of an SUV. Hopefully they make the people the focus of the next two; not the bikes or even the riders.

I thoroughly enjoyed the LWR series and actually found that I liked the guys. Yeah, sure, there was some cheesey bits, but it was made for television, so that's natural. Good on them and I'm looking forward to the new series.

Like a lot of folk, I thought LWR started out a bit woosy. But when you look at the distances they built up to, the terrain the rode over etc, they really toughened up and did a great job. I have tons of respect for anyone acheiving this and putting it out on show for everyone to see - the good, the bad and the ugly. Well done and bring on more I say!

A wee query on the starting location of Long Way Down - is it London or somewhere in Scotland ?

What are you guys on? LWR was fantastic. These negative comments probably come from you guys with your shiny, kitted BMW's and KTM's wich have never seen any offroad action and then look down on my muddy 18 year old Africa Twin.Go and attempt something like that yourself and see how far you get.To me it was just great seeing two un-Hollywood like actors, who happen to dig bikes, have a go at a dream.

    James,

In fact, I do have a BMW and KTM. The BMW did the followed the Dakar, with me on it. And I did ride though out Africa, Asia and South America with my bikes, so I think I can make opinions.

If you read the article, plus the other ones I wrote about these 2, you'd see that I don't belittle their riding ability, just the fact that they are not "real" RTWers, since the real ones don't have a support truck, logistics staff, medical and what have you not. They are truly on their own, and if something goes bad, no one to fall back on. That is what makes it a real adventure, not when you have several safety nets. But yes, it's still pretty neat what they did.

I agree that other 'Round-the-Worlders may have had less support, but they also didn't have to carry a camera crew and producer around with them. McGregor and Boorman deserve credit for trying something difficult and sharing the challenges, eye-opening experiences and joy of completion with the rest of us. When their bikes broke on the plains of Asia, Boorman and McGregor didn't use Jedi mind tricks to solve their problems; they adapted and pressed on.

I'm looking forward to more from them.

Not "real" RTW'ers? I love it when people come up with criteria to belittle other peoples personal achievements and to make them feel a little bigger.

I started out skeptical of the notion of two hollywood actors doing this trip. I was, I now feel, distracted by all the sponsership and support staff rather than looking at the enormityy of what they planned to do. I can't wait for more from these guys!
