It definitely looks like GPS navigation systems are now mainstream for motorcycles. Not only are there now specific GPSs made for motorcycles (like TomTom Rider {link}) but several motorcycle manufacturers have made deals with GPS manufacturers to OEM their equipment. The latest company to announce a deal is Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha. They have concluded a deal with Garmin to market their models under the Yamaha badge. Yamaha buys in the body of the GPS, and installs them in their top-of-the-line motorcycles. Yamaha also plan to sell the motorcycle GPS to other motorcycle manufacturers. It is not know, which Garmin models are involved. This follows Honda's announcement earlier this year to incorporate Garmin units in their Goldwing motorcycles. Honda plan to incorporate the Garmin GPS, as a factory option, directly into the 2006 Goldwing (the motorcycle equipped with an airbag - {link}) dash. The GPS unit would be controlled via selectors built into the motorcycle. The whole unit would appear seamless inside the Goldwing. German manufacturer BMW have already had an agreement with Garmin for several years. They are now selling their second generation GPS. The unit was initially sold in the top-of-the-line BMW motorcycle, the LT, but now is available for models such as the GS and K series. Technically, the GPSs are like the original Garmin units, except more expensive. The difference comes with the extra goodies thrown, like software updates, or like in BMW's case, all BMW motorcycle garages pre-programmed in the GPS. Click here to read the original Yamaha article.
