For those of you who don't know, the UK is speed camera heaven (6000 radars at this moment, while France has a few hundred)! If you've ever travelled in England, you'll have seen a lot of radars. The radars are put in zones where there have been several fatal accidents, and planners hope that these cameras will slow people down, and hopefully avoid deadly accidents. However, this seems further away from the truth. First of all, deadly accidents have remained steady at 3400 per year, even rising last year to 3500 ! So deadly accidents are not declining. Instead what these "safety committees" are starting to notice, is that (specially) motorcycles slow down when there's a radar up ahead, and when they've passed, the motorcycle speeds up again !! Duh !! Was that so difficult to foresee. How much money did they pay for consultants to tell them that ?? So the only thing speed cameras have accomplished was move the deadly accidents to other parts of the country. To make matters worse, currently the law tells the planners to put fixed speed radars only in locations where there've been accidents. Now, this is going to change. The change will allow the Police to place radars in areas where there have been crashes, but not in the direct area. This means they can more or less place radars anywhere they want. Also, the mobile radars will have their range extended from 5 kilometers to 20 ! And they'll be targeting motorcycles, since we're faster !! Click here to read the full article.
