The French Angry Biker Association (FFMC) organized last weekend a massive motorcycle protest throughout France. Usually, the FFMC have good reasons to organize motorcycle protests. This time they had a very good reason. The current obstacle is motorcycle safety. The French government wants to have cars turn-on their lights during daytime (Daytime Running Lights - DRL) in the winter as is currently the case in more Northern European countries (The Netherlands, Scandinavia). The FFMC are saying, rightfully so, that if cars have their DRL, then motorcycles will no longer be as visible as is the case today. In fact, the French government made DRL mandatory for motorcycles some 20 years ago, citing motorcycle safety !! Does that now mean that it's no longer safety that matters for motorcycles ?? Some 6,000 motorcycles protested in Paris, 3,000 in Lille and a total of 30,000 throughout France. The way a biker protest is performed in France, involves usually a total paralysis of the city in question. Motorcycles go to the main axes and halt, thereby stopping all traffic. Cars are usually very supportive of biker needs. The DRL is no exception. Hopefully enough pressure can be exerted to make the French government change direction.
