Well, it's the evening of the 29th of December, and after a long and hard ride down to Barcelona, Jacques and I are walking down the Las Ramblas (the Champs Elysee, 5th Avenue, The Strip etc of Barcelona - that one main piece of real estate in a big city that is a main gathering point) when every few minutes there's an almighty rush of sound and another Dakar competitors rides past you in a motorcycle, car, 4WD or Truck.
It seems like every Dakar competitor is meant to pass Las Ramblas tonight. The KTM squads pass at high speeds, swerving through the cars like Parisian delivery scooters! And the noise !!!!
And what does your roving reporter forget in his hotel room... yes.... my camera !!! What good am I to you.... shame on me !
Anyway, the atmosphere was great. Trucks are blowing their horns, all pedestrians are waving at the contestants. When one of the vehicles stops for a red light, they are swamped by people who want their photo taken with the competitor. I think they've never seen so many people looking at them and cheering them on. Most cars & trucks had the navigators driving.
