ACEM  , Europe's motorcycle manufacturer association, have produced a multiple language information booklet on protective clothing for motorcycle riders.
This free, downloadable, 16 page PDF booklet, gives you an idea what kind of protective clothing you should consider, and why.
In the ACEM booklet "Protective Clothing for Riders", they talk about jackets, trousers, helmets, goggles, ear plugs, gloves and boots.
In the booklet, you can see the % of protectiveness (the protection factor). For example, wearing sneakers gives you 46% protection, while wearing motorcycle boots, gives you 93%.

What's interesting, is that the booklet is not only geared towards motorcycle riders, but also moped riders.
