AKE, the German manufacturers of a range of wireless communicators for motorcycles (click here to read our review) have released a new Bluetooth headset, the Helmset 201. The AKE Helmset 201 is a Bluetooth 2.0 A2DP based wireless headset, giving you full stereo and an extended range (typically between 100 and 300 meters). This means that you could even use it, in a limited way, for bike-to-bike communications, and only with 1 motorcycle (so 2 in total). The difference with AKE's headsets and others is the design. There's nothing that needs to be bolted on/glued on to the helmet; the Helmset 201 (and its predecessor 101) is very thin and slides into the neck-guard of your helmet. You can still operate it when riding, even with gloves. If you want, there's even a remote control coming shortly. The unit is not rain proof (there is a rainproof cover on its way), but since it sits inside the helmet, there's no need. The unit can run for 4 hours in continuos communications, or 150 in standby time. It takes 3 hours to fully charge the headset. Batteries can be easily replaced. The 201 operates independently of any other AKE unit (like its PowerCom hubs). If you want to use it as an intercom, you will need another 201. For 201 to 201 intercom operations, you'll need the 201i. The 201 can pair with any variety of Bluetooth devices, like mobile phones and GPSs. It adheres to the HSP (HeadSet Profile) and HFP (Hands-Free Profile) Bluetooth profiles. Price: € 220 (in Germany) Availability; End July Click here to access their website (at the time of writing, their site had not yet received the new product)
