A technology initially designed for fighter jets (not to see what behind them, but to cut cockpit glare), cars have seen dimming mirrors for quite some time now. You have electronic versions, and manual ones. But motorcycles have traditionally been left out. Until now... AlphaMirrors produce LCD based dimmer mirrors for cars, and now they have a full product line for motorcycles. Their motorcycle mirrors replace your current mirror, but no further installation is required. Just unscrew your old mirror and replace it with the new one. The mirrors fit Harley-Davidson and Metric motorcycles, and any that use 5/16-24 threaded mounting bolt and 10mm right threaded mounting bolt, or a 10mm left threaded mounting bolt. The mirrors are battery operated, so no wiring to your motorcycles. The battery should last 3 years, and replacing it involves taking off the mirror back cover and putting in a new standard CR2450 lithium battery. The AlphaMirror when it "senses" a strong light, changes the LCD shade or color, thereby dimming the lights from vehicles behind you to a more "normal" level. This way you'll not get blinded by traffic behind you during evening riding. Several mirror shapes and colors exist. You can color coordinate your mirrors with your motorcycles. If you ride your motorcycle often at night, this might just be a worthwhile investment. I know from personal experience that cars driving behind you at night can sufficiently blind your riding to cause real problems! Often cars don't think about dimming their lights when driving behind a motorcycle... Price: US$499 a pair Availability: December 2007 International: Add US$10 for shipping A die-cast version will be produced, which should lower the costs. Click here to access their site
