Until now, Victoria, Australia police were not allowed to hide their radar equipment when doing a mobile speed trap. If they placed themselves somewhere to perform a speed check, they had to be visible. So no hiding behind publicity signs or in the bushes or other sneaky positions. That is because the Australian government at the time had decided that speed checks were supposed to be a deterrent. If you saw the police officer, you would slow down.

Now, this sensible rule has changed. Citing police officer personal safety, the cops are now allowed to hide themselves from angry motorists. The new rules state: "This does not preclude a MRSCO (ed: mobile road speed camera operator) from utilizing roadside vegetation or fixtures such as posts or signs in order to mitigate the risk of occupational health and safety incidents being initiated by other road users." In other words, they don't want motorists to stop and beat the living daylights out of cops.

Last fiscal year, in the Victoria state alone, over 1 million speeding tickets were issued.
