India based Bajaj Autos has announced it will stop the production line that has made it what it is today, one of the leading motorcycle manufacturers in India, or even the world. The production line in question is their scooter line. Back in the 80's Bajaj became popular with its Hamara Bajaj campaign (see below for one of its TV ads), making scooters a popular vehicle. But slowly, motorcycles started becoming more and more important for their line of business, until today, where Bajaj only makes one scooter, the Kristal (a 100 cc scoot, check the link for more info), and that has not been selling that well. According to Bajaj, only 1,000 units are made per month, and most of them are for export. So, starting next year, Bajaj will stop making scooters. Instead, they will concentrate on their growing motorcycle market. They have recently launched a new 135 cc Pulsar motorcycle. Bajaj make some 3 million motorcycles per year, compared to Honda's 7 million. According to Bajaj's Managing Director, Rajiv Baja, "One day, God willing, we will be the largest motorcycle company in the world. If we have to be a motorcycle specialist, we have to make sacrifice (in scooter segment) Now our focus is on motorcycles," he said and added that the company wants to become the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world.
