One of the most recognized police motorcycles in the world is BMW Open link in a new window (obviously they don't have the monopoly, have a look at the related articles below for a lot of police motorcycle, all very unusual). The Germany manufacturer has been selling specially equipped police motorcycles almost since they started making them last century (and it's not only police, but firefighters, medical, road assistance, military etc). From 1970, BMW have sold 130,000 "Authority" motorcycles.

One country that had over the decades been difficult for BMW to penetrate for the "authorities" market has been the USA. With local brands like Harley-Davidson and Indian, it becomes difficult for police departments to justify buying a motorcycle that is not made in the USA. But that has over the last 10 years or so been less and less an obstacle.

Now, more and more cities and states are buying German. It's not a status symbol, but a reality check since BMW excels in make a motorcycle that is unrivaled in features, quality and performance. Police motorcycles aren't just used for escorting VIPs and strolling alongside the city roads to catch purse snatchers. High speed pursuits are a regular occurrence for the cops, and for that you need a motorcycle that you can ride very fast and for prolonged times.

BMW Michigan State Police

Recently the Michigan State police bought 9 BMW RT1200-P, the new water-cooled flagship police bike for BMW. The Michigan LEOs have a fleet of 24 motorcycles, and the idea is to replace the existing fleet of motorcycles with these new BMWs.

The motorcycles are all made on a special dedicated production line in the BMW Berlin facilities, a production line that has been very busy since last year. Just this year so far the police departments in Vacaville (California) and Austin (Texas) placed order for 25 police bikes, and that's just in the USA.

BMW Authority Motorcycles USA

The current range of motorcycles that can be customized for police and other authority functions are the R1200RT, F800GT, F650GS and F800GS.

Contrary to urban myths, the BMW police bikes are not fitted with super engines that can ride faster than the civilian version. The engine, gearbox and other essentials are the same. They differ in items like single saddle, communication gear, strobes & siren, special panniers etc.
