There are not that many great motorcycle books out there. I guess that is because the authors who write and ride, do one, not both. But Ara Gureghian has managed to do both. His recently released book "Freedom on Both Ends of the Leash: A Dog, His Man, Their Journey" is a heartfelt journey of a wounded father, his eternally faithful dog and a trusted BMW motorcycle with sidecar.

The story reminds me a lot of that other epic motorcycle road story, "Ghost Rider" by Rush's (the Rock band) famous drummer Neil Peart (link Open link in a new window). Like in Neil Peart's book, Ara is faced with a severe personal tragedy and to heal his wounds, he loads up whatever personal belongings he has and his faithful dog Spirit into a BMW GS sidecar, and heads out on the open road.

This was some 10 years ago, and Ara is still on the road. But in the mean time, he has found the time to write this excellent book, more focussed on his travels in the USA, but also the discovery of himself and inner peace, the people he has met and the places he has seen.

Ara is Armenian but born in France and has travelled extensively as child (and adult) throughout the world. He is a top professional chef having worked in some of the major restaurants, and it is no surprise that he talks about the food he has created while on the road.

The story is well constructed, and when you read it you can't help but feel like you are sitting around a campfire somewhere in the wilderness listening to Ara tell his amazing stories. Life on the road brings many anecdotes and life experiences, and Ara knows how to tell them. It's not only interesting, but quite educational. The book is 216 pages long (short?), and for anyone wanting to discover the USA, this is where you will read about the incredible destination you can visit and see.

While on the road, Ara also runs a successful web site entitled "The Oasis Of My Soul Open The Oasis Of My Soul link in a new window", which is very much worth a visit, not only if you are into motorcycles, but also if you are into food.

I can't but highly recommend reading this book.
