Multiple winner of the Dakar Open link in a new window rally, Frenchman Cyril Despres Open link in a new window lives and breathes motorcycles. But like many Dakar winners before him, racing this extreme physical race on a motorcycle, even if it's a KTM, is tough. And like others, many Dakar racers have given in to the dark side of Dakar racing; they do it in a car.

Famous motorcycle Dakar winners who have gone and won the Dakar in a car  include names like Stephane Peterhansel Open link in a new window (the most successful Dakar racer all times), Nani Roma Open link in a new window and Hubert Auriol Open link in a new window (the first one to go and win both motorcycles and cars) and others.

Now it looks like Cyril Despres is slowly, but surely, moving towards four wheels. However, instead of racing a 4x4 car in a some rally, Cyril raced a 1971 600 bhp Corvette C3R in a classic car rally. Not exactly an off-road race, but it's a start to get used to racing 4 wheels.

According to Cyril Despres “I somehow always imagined that my first ever car race would be a rally-raid in a 4x4. Instead I found myself in the hot seat of a 600 bhp Corvette in a classic car rally. Clearly a result was never on the cards! That said, show me a checkered flag and a give me a start time and I am a racer, plus I had a moral obligation to my sponsors Maison France Confort, who prepared and entered the car, to give it my all."

As a footnote, Cyril didn't do to well in the race, since the car broke down.

In the mean time, he hasn't given up on motorcycles. Despres is participating in the upcoming Sardegna Rally. So I guess we'll see Despres at next year's Dakar.... but what about 2013?
