The Dakar 2008  is almost upon us, so let's have a quick look at the participation in the form of a quiz.
1. Motorcycle Manufacturer
No sense in asking which is the best represented of the 11 motorcycle manufacturers in the rally (it's KTM in case you really don't know, with 64.20% - 156 bikes - of the total of 243). So, who do you think is the 2nd and 3rd best represented motorcycle in the Dakar 2008??

Some strange motorcycles are competing: New Power from China, with 2 bikes, and Tot Curses from Spain with 2 (although I'd think they're both based on some existing motorcycle like a KTM). Further, there are 2 Aprilia's, 3 BMW's, 3 Beta's and 1 Gas-Gas (I don't even want to think about their spares problems..).
2. Contestant Countries
Again, no cigar for guessing the answer, the overall leading country in this French rally is France (69 contestants, 28.40% of the total). So who are the 2nd and 3rd most represented countries ???

The USA only has 3 riders this year, same as Russia, China and Germany.
I can't see from the current files how many females are participating, but I can see that Ludivine Puy (France) {link} and Annie Seel (Sweden) {link} are at it again. I'd say it's going to be a toss up which of the two will be the first female.

2. Contestant Countries
2nd position is shared by The Netherlands and Spain, both with 27 riders, representing each 11.11%.
3rd most represented country is Italy with 14 riders (5.76%).
