It's a sad day when terrorists can manage to cancel one of world biggest and toughest races, the Dakar.
There have been several terrorist threats from within Mauritania, and since 4 French tourists were murdered there a few weeks ago, the French government advised the organizers not to go through that country. Since 9 stages are held in that country, all in the famous sand dunes, it would mean the end of this year's edition.
According to the French TV partners, the race is now cancelled. I can only try to imagine how the contestants are felling at this moment. training for months, saving every penny they have to get them there, and then the day before it starts, it gets cancelled.
Let's hope the organizers can manage to still find a way of holding this race, even if it means escorting the contestants with tanks.
Sad, sad start of the year.....
