	Dakar 2011 In Africa - EAST! 18 January 2010   File under  Dakar Race   Author: Mike Werner   Location: Normandy, France According to the French state owned television channel, France 2 (one of the main sponsors of the Dakar rally), ASO (the organizers of the race), are looking into returning to the African continent next year, but not in the traditional race to Dakar as we've seen in the past 30+ years, but in the North East of Africa. ASO have received invitations to race from Tunisia, Libya and Egypt (but also from Chile and Argentina). The roots of the Dakar race have always been in Africa, but because of terrorist threats, they abandoned the 2008 race, and went to South America, where they have raced for 2 years. Though many liked the race in South America, the traditionalists are calling for the Dakar to go back to Africa. Since the Western part of Africa is still under terrorist threat, the likelihood for a race in the East is pretty high (though Egypt is not exactly a safe place). The deserts in Libya and Egypt are enormous, which would make the rally into a really tough race, with lots of deep sand. The decision will be made in the next few weeks, something a lot of aspiring motorcycle racers here in Europe are waiting for.
