Analyses by the US based Highway Loss Data Institute (HDI) shows a statistics that probably will not surprise anyone; Supersport motorcycles have by far the highest death rate, almost 4 times higher than other motorcycle types. Supersport motorcycles are fast, very fast, and many of them have young and inexperienced riders. In 2005, the supersport motorcycle accounted for 25% of deadly accidents, while only accounting for 10% of the total number of motorcycles. The next in line for the "prize" of the number of deaths, are the sport motorcycles. Touring motorcycles have the lowest. Another alarming statistics is the rise of deadly motorcycle accidents. Between 2000 and 2005, there has been a total increase of 59% (that's right, no typo, 59%!) of deadly accidents. The dramatic figure is offset by the fact that there was a 51% increase in registrations of motorcycles. It's obvious that fast and powerful sports motorcycles generate faster speeds. Speed was for 57% the primary factor for supersport crashes, compared to 27% for cruisers and 22% for touring motorcycles. So maybe you'll be seeing what we have in France... a cap on the engine horse power at 100 hp! Click here to read the rest of the statistics (Thanks Greg Lewis)
