 Despite European government efforts to clampdown on speeding, in a concentrated effort during one week last August, Police in 19 European countries went looking for speeders. During this week, 800,000+ cars and motorcycles were caught speeding, representing 100,000 speeders per day. The last time they performed such a concentrated effort was last April, with exactly the same result, 100,000 speeding ticket per day. Half of the speeders were in France (408,267). They don't specify however, how many of the speeding car and motorcycle were foreign registered... the month of August usally means a lot of tourists on the road. Compared with the results of April this year, not much as changed. France is still the worst speeding nation, followed by The Netherlands and Germany, while Moldova and Finland saw the most dramatic reduction in the number of speeders: | Country | Apr | Aug | Change | | Belgium | 16,852 | 14,860 | -13.41 | | Cyprus | 1,328 | 2,391 | 44.46 | | Denmark | 4,671 | 5,852 | 20.18 | | Finland | 11,466 | 5,440 | -110.77 | | France | 316,338 | 408,267 | 22.52 | | Germany | 91,356 | 119,566 | 23.59 | | Greece | 4,722 | 7,493 | 36.98 | | Hungary | 3,699 | 7,032 | 47.40 | | Ireland | 3,958 | 4,108 | 3.65 | | Italy | 27,843 | 32,379 | 14.01 | | Lithuania | 2,218 | 3,652 | 39.27 | | Moldova | 1,649 | 480 | -243.54 | | Norway | 1,945 | 1,930 | -0.78 | | Poland | 14,965 | 11,870 | -26.07 | | Romania | 15,499 | 16,933 | 8.47 | | Slovenia | 1,058 | 3,253 | 67.48 | | Spain | 18,528 | 16,654 | -11.25 | | Sweden | 15,054 | | | | The Netherlands | 183,791 | 166,179 | -10.60 | | UK | 27,717 | 28,209 | 1.74 | | | 764,657 | 856,548 | 10.73 | So now the question is, does the speed repression really work....? Or have people become used to it, and have started speeding again. Source: TisPol
